Just have a a question or two.
What is a good neighbor hood to live (upper middle to higher)? I am helping someone find a place to live there, and we havent a clue about which neighborhoods to look in. they can afford about 1500-2000 Can$ and would like a 2 bed room flat.
Also from what weve seen, maontreal must be signifacantly cheaper than most major US cities (maybe even canadien ones too |

Two things to check, the local real estate board and the local police websites. The former may provide info about neighbourhoods. The police website will probably have statistics related to crime rates by neighbourhood.
I don't live in Montreal but if I were moving there these are a couple of places I would check.
(You can search for users who have listed Montreal as their location) |

There is a million and one different neighbourhoods in Montreal, and all are unique. Without diving into too much detail into them and assuming whoever you are helping out wants to live in a predominantly anglophone neighbourhood, I would recommend Westmount. It is among the richest (I'm assuming the $2000 is per month and that is a LOT to pay for a place in Montreal) and safest neighbourhoods in Montreal and it is also right next to downtown. You really can't go wrong with Westmount (though the neighbourhood does like to be its own entity and so you'll have to deal with stupidities like max parking time of 4hrs on the street and some other truly whacky parking restrictions). We could also add some parts of Outremont to a close relative of Westmount. It's also close to downtown.
If you want to be even closer to where the action is, the Plateau is the next place to check out. Prices will be relatively high here as well (due to location), but it's probably one of Montreal's most intersting neighbourhoods to live in. It's also mainly a francophone neighbourhood - good for learning french no doubt.
The farther you go away from the city center, the cheaper things get (and generally pretty fast I think). In GENERAL, west means english, east means french.
Hope that's a start for ya.
