Hi all,
I've just bought a new EF-S 55-250 IS lens for my 400D/XTi and I think it's causing the camera to lock up. It will take some shots then the camera will stop responding, the displays both go off but the camera will not respond to any buttons or switch off unless I pull the battery out. This has happened with IS on and off, with the CF card both in and out but not with the kit 18-55 lens.
Has anyone else had this? Am I right in thinking that it is the lens rather than the camera?
Thanks,
Col. |

The same thing happened to my 400d a couple of times- once in the freezing cold during a photoshoot and another in more or less the same condtions. The power light stayed on but I had to take out the battery grip to get control back.
That was with the Tamron 17-50mm so I doubt it's a lens issue unless the lenses are incredibly similar in a certain trait... which I doubt.
It seems to happen rather randomly. Incidentally, how many pictures have you taken with it? I've taken around 9,000 with mine so far.

| I've not taken many at all, I've only had it just over a week - I'd say 5-700. This has happened in the house, so pretty much ideal operating conditions. |

Try to eliminate as many variables as you can. Did you eliminate the CF card as being the culprit? I would insert another card, and do an in-camera format.
On the other hand, put your new lens on another camera and see was the results are.
It's all the "process of elimination". ;-)

| I tried it without a CF card in at all and it still locked. Will see if I can try the lens on another camera. |

Sounds like a plan. Let us know what you find out.
