Thought I'd post this as a public service message. My brother got a GPS recently, and he mentioned this in passing the other day.

It's not surprising to think that GPS units are targets for thieves. Like many folks, I make a habit of taking my GPS out of my window suction cup thing if I'm at a mall, or whatever. But apparently some number of idiots are guessing (often correctly) that people are just sticking the GPS in the glove box, and they'll break in and steal them.

That's not the scary part...

The scary part is that if you have a garage door opener, they'll take that, too. And since a lot of us have a waypoint in the GPS called "Home," you've just given a crook exact directions to your house and a perfect way to get in.

Sooooo... it's definitely worth your while to name your home waypoint something more obscure, and hide the GPS somewhere much less obvious if you want to stash it out of sight.

If only people would treat others the way they'd like to be treated themselves. What a wonderful world it would be.

After the radio faceplate was stolen out of my car (and both door handles are still screwed up from the break-in) I got a new radio. The problem is, I never put the new faceplate in my car. It lives on top of the fridge.

Some people suck. Inconsiderate, disrespectful asses.

Cool tip, Alan.

Well besides the gps giving away where you live, most people have something in their glove box that has their address on it.I wouldn't worry too much because people that break into your car for a gps system or radio are very unlikely to rob your house.
