My wife just got back from a wedding with a card full of snapshots. (Using a Fujifilm F30 set to AUTO)

I noticed that in most of the indoor shots, although the flash is firing it's recording settings like: f/2.8, 1/100s, ISO800 or even f/2.8, 1/60s, ISO1600. Remember, the flash also fired for these shots. The exposures look okay, just very noisy (especially for the ISO1600 ones). The outdoor shots look great, ISO200 or 400 in some cases, no flash.

If the flash is firing, I wouldn't expect the camera to have to push it to ISO1600 as well! - I'd have thought the f/2.8 in conjunction with the flash would have been sufficient to get an acceptable exposure. Is this normal for a P&S?

For some weird reason, the Fuji F20s and F30s both do this. They are really excellent little cameras at high ISO but you can't use them on Auto for indoor shots - I always do the manual setting on my F20 and my F30. I am able to take a lot of indoor shots without a flash using my F20 and F30 using ISO 400 and 800 - the 1600 on the F30 is kind of noisy. One thing I have noticed is that flash shots taken on Auto with ISO 800 are more evenly lighted than flash shots at ISO 100 - you don't get that dark background/bright flash area look nearly as much. I'm guessing that is the reason for this odd setting in Auto Mode.

I think Sammie hit the nail on the head. The camera is trying to balance ambient and flash, and in a dark hall, and bumps the ISO way up to try to compensate for a very dark venue.

Ahhhhh.... yes. You're both right. The backgrounds are brighter than I'd have expected. That explains it.

It's a strange way for Auto to operate though.
