I have been told a few different ways to do portrait shots. So I was wondering how you shoot them? Manual mode? aperture?
I have tried shooting several different ways and still really havent found a "comfort zone" yet. |

I'll either do mine in aperture priority or manual.

What would be the difference in A or M mode? I know M you have to adjust all your settings. In A mode, the camera does the adjusting for you right? and you adjust the A? |

That's my understanding of it. I shoot in manual all the time, but I confess, that's because I feel incompetent in the other modes. |

That's right, but if you're using flashes, often the shutter speed in A mode will be severely limited (at least in Nikons, not sure about Canon) to a synch speed of something like 1/60. This is fine if you're using a wide lens, but if you're using a longer lens you'll get a lot of camera shake and blurry images. This is where manual mode really shines for me. |

I use manual.
I use a flash meter to get my aperature etc right, then get all my ISO set, use the expodisc to get the right White Balance, then take the photos. |

Manual mode if I'm using flash: aperture to control flash exposure, shutter speed to control ambient light exposure. This gives me the ability to balance the flash and ambient light.
If I'm shooting with ambient light only, I may use Av mode... it just depends on if I need the extra control for creative purposes.

Manual.
The subject matters more.
