I have to wonder, since every one of us complains about low votes without comments to let us know why, WHO is doing all the voting without commenting? My theory is there are some folks that do a lot of voting, but do not comment or participate in the forums to read this. Does my theory have any merit?

If I give a low score and don't make a comment, it's usually because the photo just didn't cut the mustard. How do you suggest I leave a comment stating that? I know when you submit a photo to a challange you think it's your best effort, but when compared to the competition, it just might not measure up (that's what I mean by not cutting the mustard.) I'm not sure that complaining about it will improve any future photos submitted.

With hundreds of thousands of pictures on the site, it's impossible to see them all.
Unless something or someone takes us to certain shots they'll likely be missed and even if they're not, unless there's something special (good or bad) they're unlikely to be commented on, unless one has specifically posted, asking for comments.
(I know, we think our shots ARE special or we wouldn't post them, but sometimes it's a connection only with us and unappreciated by others.)

One of the best ways I've found to get comments is to give them. Often people go to the profiles of those who have left comments for them, have a look around, and end up leaving some great comments and favourites.

I have several shots with 250-350 views with no comments, and others with hardly any views compared to their comments and faves.

To sum it up, this is a big community and nobody's going to be just sitting and waiting for you (or anyone else) to post your latest so they can rush in with praise. If you don't want to get lost in the shuffle of a VERY large site, get involved and make yourself visible, in a positive way :)

You could explain how they didn't cut the mustard. Did it not make the grade b/c of technicals or was it subject matter? What would you have done differently in the photo to improve the shot? These are things you could comment to them to let them know why you hated the shot. If they don't know why you voted it low there is no way for them to learn. Just my thoughts. Trevor~

I use to vote and not comment the first time I was a member but I try not to do that this time, I recently voted and commented on a whole challenge, even though it was only like 80 some pictures, it was still alot of work. Some of the pictures leave you speechless (in both a good and bad way, lol). But again I am trying more and more that if I look at a picture or votethen I will comment also.

Thank you Trevor. You do make a good point about learning. I guess I was just thinking about previous sites I've been on and when I commented, people took it really personally and then retaliated and made immature comments about my work.

I completely agree. Sometimes, the only comment that comes to mind is "Nice try, but it just isn't a good picture." Then, however, I'm a jerk and people don't like me. The solution is I don't leave a comment at all.

I did not mean that complaining will improve anything. I suppose my observation was not clear. We all think our entry is a masterpiece and are then dismayed when it gets low votes. We want to know why. If a person is going to complain about that in a "post your scores" thread, my reasonable assumption is that they are themselves commenting on the ones they vote on. (The classic "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you".) Not right to complain about low votes with no comments unless you are making sure to leave comments to accompany your own votes.

I frequently don't vote an entire challenge anymore. I often do the minumum of 20%, but I make sure to leave comments, especially on the ones I give 5's or lower. It is sometimes difficult to identify why I don't care for a photo when it is not a bad shot. That has been helping my own photos get better, because I learn something I can apply to my own stuff. I've actually been enjoying this site more, and getting more out of it since I began doing that.

I would accept that. Sometimes I will comment that I don't care for it, but I just can't quite identify why. Often while I am typing this, I will realize what it is that I don't care for. People on this site either develop a thick skin or leave. As long as the comment is not a rude attack it is fine. Your suggested comment is fine, but writing "This pic sucks wind!" is not.

Now, on Flickr, I do not normally leave constructive criticism unless it is asked for. I've seen some pretty cheesy stuff there that has dozens of "perfect photographer awards" in the comments. But, the whole point of that site is different from DPC and both have their place. Sometimes I will experiment with something there to see if anyone likes it. I've often been surprised at what has gotten attention.

After reading this thread I took a look at your portfolio and recognized a few of those images ... weren't you a member before? I think your username was missynita or something similar, right? If so, welcome back to the madness!

....how I can have 76 views on a picture but only have 4 comments and 1 favorite? Isn't it amazing how I haven't been on DPChallenge in over a week and still there is not even 1 extra comment? Not trying to be annoying but its crazy and I just find that "amazing". I think their should be a rule, if you view a picture you should have to comment on it. How can anybody learn or grow if they are getting no feedback.
This is the picture of mine that got the best feedback,

I should be loading more pictures soon, as soon as I can get to walmart to copy my pictures to a cd (I lost the loading cord to my camera). Maybe I will get more feedback this time! :), Hopefully, either way I guess in time stuff like that will come. I guess I can't just join a site and expect all that to happen right away, it is just alittle frustrating.

How about this...
I viewed it and didn't leave a comment there but instead posted a reply here.
Get over it.
