I've shot plays before, but I want to volunteer for photographing a local small community runway type thing. I normally wouldnt volunteer, but

1. I want to get to know a few models and
designers to be. [and get my name out to them]

2. Its a community thing at the local Rec and I really want to build experience in this area [journalism].

Would this idea be worth it?

[btw i've shot really only plays before...]

Of course it would be worth it! You'll gain experience.

It sounds like a great idea. You are not shooting for free you are shooting for the experience. When you are first starting out that is worth a lot more then money.
