HI,

I bought some extra batteries for my 5D from ebay (Maxcell 7.4v Max 2500mAH Li-Poly). I have tried charging these in my canon charger but get no joy. Will I need a different charger for these new batteries or are they unusable???

Thanks

Tim

In my experience with 3rd party batteries they charge just fine in the camera charger as well as the 3rd party charger.

For reliable 3rd party batteries I go here: //www.sterlingtek.com

ETA: are you sure you bought the right battery for the camera?

I got 2 BP-511 from Sterlingtek, no problems, higher capacity than the original Canons.

A third party battery I had once was finicky about charging in the canon charger, but I never actually figured out if it really wasn't charging, or if it just didn't make the right connection to make the charge light work. Might be worth testing out.

I sometimes have problems with batteries in my charger and have to wiggle the batteries till the charging light comes on.

I've heard that the canon charger won't full charge higher capacity third party batter. LiIon batts have a chip in them so the don't overcharge and explode and that's the issue with the charging bit.
I have a couple of different third party batts and one has given me issues but the rest seem fine. I can't say teh larger capacity ones last longer or not. My one third party batt (i have it handy) says 7.2 v, 1400 mah whereas the canon one next to it is 1390mah and 7.4 volts. The newest ones are list as 7.4v 2000 mah and i can't say they last 50% longer so I might tend to believe the canon charger has a built in set point - but we'll likely never know beyond such anecdotal evidence as I've just given.

I've had excellent results with the sterlingtek batteries also.
