When I installed 2 GB of RAM into my laptop, only 1.87 GB actually is recognized. Why is this?

You don't have a dedicated video card and the computer is using some of the system memory (your 2gb) as video memory.

Thank you. You are so smart. I was too cheap to get a dedicated video card because the laptop is basically for internet surfing...no need to get a video card for that.
