Been thinking of venturing out into the world of off camera flash so I decide to get a flash cord for my Sigma EF-500 dg (which I have no idea how to use). The problem is that it looks like the going thing is 3 feet of length. What am I missing? I don't think three feet of cord is going to be near enough. Are there extensions you can buy (or even longer cables)? I know I can do off camera flash if I fire the main but are there any workarounds to that if I just want sidelighting?

Not sure about the jack connection, but I bought 3m extention for my remote. It was for a Canon, but works fine with the Pentax. Got it off eBay, and used with my 3m remote means I get well away from what I am shooting. For what it costs might be worth a look!

Hi Phil,

It's probably time for you to check out:

Strobist

Go to the Lighting 101 link and then into the forums for further info.

Cheers.

the off-shoe cord is so eTTL still works, primarily for using a flash bracket or perhaps some macro work.

If you want eTTL then you have to have two flashes or the st-e2.

Thanks for the replies.

RamblinR - I actually was checking out strobist when I posted this up. Just going through his checklist in lighting 101 made me ask the question.

I have found that pc cables are cheaper and longer but my flash doesn't have a pc connection (my camera has pc and hot shoe). Could I do an extension and adapter or am I way off base?

You can get a hot shoe to PC adaptor for the flash. It would be 100% manual though.

hotshoe adapters do not work on sigma flashes. No one I can talk to knows why, but they don't. I found this out first hand. The canon 580EX2 and Metz 54 both work fine, but the EF500DG Super won't trip when on the adapter. Drove me nuts for a few hours!

Then use the onboard flash with something in front of it to trigger the Sigma optically. Make sure to watch out for the ETTL preflash, it'll set off the Sigma before the real flash should fire. Use the star (*) button to fire the preflash and then release the shutter when the flash recharges. It's a pain in the butt, but all you can do without another external flash.
