As you approach 1/1 magnification and beyond, the area of the subject reflecting light to the sensor becomes smaller rapidly with decreasing focal distance, so that translates to effectively reducing brightness at the sensor. I would think that it is log function something like 1/2 the distance = 1/4 of the light. I don't know the exact math, but I am sure that someone here knows the numbers or where to find them. It's one of the reasons that it is difficult to get a sharp hand held shot when in macro territory.

Macro lens EVERY time, except when using the macro lens AND extension tubes ;-)
