My sister, who is not an avid photographer would like a compact P&S camera.

Any suggestions? Priority is obviously on the quality of photos. She won't use features that much and plans to take mostly automatically driven photos.

Thanks,
Paul

i personaly like the Canon IXUS 860 IS or any of the newer ixus range, excellent build quality all metal not cheap plastic. Built in I.S. excellent results. I am sure you will have lots of different recommendations just read some reviews.

I suggest the Nikon Coolpix L series. The L11 can be had for $100 or less. Not a lot of manual controls, so it will not intimidate your sister. Gets great battery life and takes good pictures. It's also fairly slim, though it is not quite a supercompact. Here are a couple of my shots taken with the very similar L6:

The ferris wheel only had minor color tweaks, but the T-Rex did get heavy PP because of strong backlighting.

I also owned a G6, and they can be found for cheaper now that they are an "older" model. I just sold mine which I didn't use much. The camera got great reviews, but I really don't need more than one camera. My sister and her husband just bought a new Sony Cybershot DSC-H9 (8.1MP, 15x zoom) for around $500. I only played with it briefly but I was impressed.
