Saw two today that looked promising:
Kodak ZD710 for $149. Has a 10x optical zoom and a quasi-SLR body to it. Reviews say low light shots tend to be underexposed a touch. A few members here use the z710 which appears to be nearly identical. Has both an lcd screen and an EVF. (The ZD can take SDHC cards and has a couple more image resolution choices within the same range. It's also black instead of silver, big deal.) My main point of concern is this camera was released in August of this year ('07 as of this writing) and is already on clearance for $100 under list. May be normal market prices, or may be a red flag, I'm not sure on that.
Canon A560 for $130. 4x optical zoom, point and shoot body. Shares a lot in common with my own Powershot S5, from the menus to the Digic III processor. both an LCD screen and optical viewfinder, but several reviews say the viewfinder is not very good, because it cuts off a lot that will actually be in the recorded image.
My daughter really liked my S5 when she used it a couple of months back. I am not sure if it was the heft and feel of the camera or the features that canon built into it. She has expressed some interest in photography and since she lives in another city now, I felt that this was something we could do together from a distance. I want to get her something easy to use now, but with a little room to grow. I was actually surprised to see there are way more people here using the Kodak Z710 than the Canon A550 or A560. Don't know if that means anything or not.
Thanks in advance.

Oh well, I figured this opinionated bunch would be able to give some advice. I did get a PM back from liberty (thanks!) letting me know her opinion on the Kodak. I went out today and spent $50 more than originally planned and got her a Fujifilm S5700.
Same model I originally had, but exchanged for my Canon S5. Similar feel and function, nice big zoom, decent picture quality. She ought to be thrilled with it. She's expressed an interest in photography. If this (and the computer I gave her for Christmas) does not stimulate it, then nothing will.
