Hey everyone,
I've been thinking about doing a 'project' like this for a while. Basically, it involves taking portraits of many different people, all in the same way with the exact same setup and lighting and everything. No smiling or posing, just a straight on portrait. I want them all in B&W and can just imagine a gallery with them all printed in 20x30 :) I've searched all over google and flickr for examples of what I imagine the end result to look like, and the only one I was able to find was this of Angelina Jolie :)
Now I ask you lighting experts....how is this effect done? From what I can see by the reflection in her eyes (don't know if it can be seen at this small size posted here) it looks like 3 softboxes. One above at a 45 degree angle to her face, and then two more on each side of her face. What do you think? |

looks to me like a softbox from 45 degrees above with a reflector underneath to catch the lights and to give a bit of light under the nose and chin.
If the lights were from both sides there wouldn't be the gradation of shadows around the face.
