When you click on a lens model there is a box for user rating. For as long as I've been a paying user here,it has always just said "coming soon!".
My question is; will it ever get here? I for one would love this feature, instead of posting whenever i want to know about a lens.

| You know, the "coming soon" has always kinda irritated me too... It's been there so long it's almost a parody. Getting reviews in place is one way that we all could add value to the site. I'll make sure it gets discussed. |

I've never really been impressed with customer reviews of things like lenses because:
A) Very few people have had experience with both the lens they own AND the lenses it should be compared to.
B) Psychology experiments have clearly shown that people will rate something as better or more enjoyable the more it costs.
C) People certainly don't want to be stuck having bought a stinker. |

| D) There's already user reviews at fredmiranda, so why bother. How many places do you need to read "it's as good as L"? |

For the L of it?
or because perhaps we can do a better job of it, if we try? |

Also, from a sales point of view to attract more members, this feature could be a one stop info site instead of having to go to fredmiranda.com, or digitalreview.com.

Does any site have a wiki-ish peer reviewed equipment review section. Might be something to look at. If we can try to keep the reviews balanced in some fashion, we'd have something special.

This is why they are personal reviews. When reading reviews, I always look for the reasons why or why not the user rated the product high or low. If they don't list them, then I don't consider it a credible review. I do this for movie reviews as well. I always assumed most people do this.
Making it so only members could review stuff would be a good idea though.

Canon's 50mm f/1.8 being a clear exception to this study... |

That's a nice ambition of course, and I love ambition. But in what way would it be better? Ambition is nothing without direction .(and the FM Reviews are damn hard to beat, I must say)

Until you look at the review for the 50mm/1.2. Many people will figure it must be better because it costs much more and will rate it accordingly.
I certainly not against reviews being posted. I'd probably even read them. I just find them difficult to use. I've seen people call the Bigma "really sharp" when the reality is far, far from the case. |

Except when compared with its price-point competitors, of course :-)

Exactly. "really sharp" in one person's mind might be far different from another's and they both may be "true" within the sphere of their own experience. |

Maybe while we're at the whole rating thing, we can improve the lens pictures and add in the missing ones? Most of them frankly just suck. Maybe user submitted lens photos?
