I'm trying to use my SB-600 remotely and I was wondering how to turn off the onboard Flash.
The onboard is up to trigger the SB-600 but I only want the SB-600 to fire.
Any help?
Cheers. |

Function e3 Built in Flash -> Commander Mode
It has Build In and Group A & B .. set the Mode in Built In to '--' (highlight first column and press up/down arrows until it shows --)

It should only be firing before the shutter trips, it should not actually affect the light in the photo.
When it's in Commander mode, your onboard flash only fires to signal your SB-600.
Is your SB-600 firing? If not, make sure that you've set the SB-600 to the same Group as your built in flash's Group. |

Did you press ENTER after you made the changes ? I forget that sometimes..
With the SB-600 off will the image show any light from a flash ? The flash will fire before the shutter opens so it can synchronize with the external.

Yes, I did hit Enter.
I took a few test shots and it appears that the onboard IS firing in sync with the SB-600 and not just to set it off. |

Built In "--"
The Pepcid is "side/back" lit by the SB-600.
The irony of my subject choice...

I've not yet myself been able to find a way to get the onboard flash to only trigger and not add lighting to the photo. |

If there is no way to use the onboard for a trigger without it going off, you can try the "redneck remedy" which is to put a piece of tape across the front of the on board and tilt the tape so that the light from the flash will only go up toward the ceiling. This will reduce the light from the on board that hits the subject down to a level that may not overpower the slave flash, but it will most likely still fire the slave. Some slaves are radio controlled, and some trigger from the sudden light change when the on cam flash fires. If yours is either type, then this should work for you to get the current shot, and buy time for you to experiment with settings later.

Built-in & SB-600 fire
[thumb]626864[/thumb]
Only SB-600 fires (Built-in set to --)
[thumb]626865[/thumb]
None fires (Built-in set to --, Group A set to TTL but I manualy turned off SB-600)

There's instructions on page 163 in the D200 manual.. don't know why it doesn't work for you.
