My camera has different points that are horizontal and vertical.
Does a horizontal AF point do better on something that has contrast in a horizontal direction (e.g., vertical stripes) or vertical (e.g., horizontal stripes)?
I'd think it'd be horizontal contrast that mattered, so different brightnesses are "seen" by the AF point. But that would mean it'd do better on vertical edges, and saying a horizontal point does better on vertical edges seems wrong.

I just did some testing, so for anyone else wondering the answer ...
vertical AF points (the ones that look portrait-oriented) are good for detecting horizontal lines and vice versa.

Thanks for the benefit of your experiment.
If the manual focus on my S5 were easier to use, I would probably use it as often or more than auto. |
