My friend, that we will call her Lisa for the sake for this posting. Lisa shoots with a Nikon D200 with a Nikon 18-200mm VR lens. She has owned the D200 for about a year now, she has been photographing for about 7 years. So she claims, but since I've known her, she didn't even know what the two buttons were for between the lens and the grip ( she doesn't even know how to read a histogram!). On x-mas I stopped by her house to hang out. And the conversion starts...
Lisa: So, I am going to sell my D200 and get a Canon 5D.
Me: why?
Lisa: because my d200 pictures are soo noisy and pixelated, I can never get any good photos without using flash.
Me:are you shooting raw and what program are you using?
Lisa:Yes , I am shoot raw and I am using Capture NX
Me: hmm, what ISO are you shoot at?
Lisa: 100
Me: weird, can you show me?
*Lisa shows me some sunset and landscape photos
Lisa: see it's soo noisy
Me: I don't really see anything
*Lisa zooms to 100%
Lisa: see, see that noise?
Me: looks like over sharpening to me, try turning down the sharpness
*Lisa disregarding my comment
Lisa: I always have to use Noise reduction
Me: are you sure you are using iso 100, click on the shooting info bar
*shooting info reveals that she was actually shooting at ISO 320
Lisa: but is was at 100..
Me: turn down you sharpening
* sharpening was at Medium high, I readjusted it to low
Me: there the noise is not nearly as bad (keep is mind the photo was shot with the 18-200 vr wide open)
Lisa: but it doesn't look sharp any more!
Me: try a high pass filter
*once again disregarding me
Lisa: Don't you see all the noise even when you turn down the sharpening!
Me: it still looks pretty darn clean....
*Lisa zooms in more to 300%
Lisa: see, it's just too noisy!!
*I stop, and realizing that she is zooming in 300% on a picture showing me "this noise" in a small dark area of a hill far away, that could very well be a out of focus rock.
I then think of what to say, but never thought how ridiculously over reacting about "this noise". Know that she is just convinced that her D200 sucks. I agreed with her at this point, being pointless to persuade her otherwise.
I know for just IQ the 5D is much better than the D200 for noise. But they are both really good cameras. I know even with the 5D if you over sharpen, and at about 2 stops over the lowest native ISO, you will still get some grain.
*sigh*
I sometimes I feel like I am the crazy one sometimes. :( |

@ben: You don't own an 18-200 VR yet. One more reason to agree with her :P

| Sounds like you can get a good deal on a backup camera. Especially since the noise levels are so high! |

Of course, nikon sucks.
Wasn't someone else ranting about this same thing. Some clueless person dropping a chunk of money on a camera to take good pictures.
Blow it off and move on. |

Ben - give her my e-mail address and I'll make her an offer that is fitting a faulty sensor. I only live up the road so shipping will be cheap.
Time for me to back to two bodies. |

Shows the history of the picture... From 300 BC I think... if you are lucky, and have the latest camera, that probably goes back to 250 BC per photo ;)
