The problem is that you really don't need a contract UNTIL something goes wrong. What would happen if bridezilla sues for a bazzilion dollars due to some accident with the pics and you have no valid contract? It might work out.... best case you are out more $ then vetting the contract in the first place.

thanks to Prof_Fate for the reality check. unfortunately, i am in no position to quit my 9-5 to be a photographer. maybe one day. for now, this is a part time gig. if i have clients that are shooting for a photographer like you, i will surely refer them out. I wish I could do it 110% and do it big. but unfortunately, i have to do it gradually as a hobby turned into extra cash. I know that to you and other pros, the kinda stuff i ask and plan to do sounds appauling, but i gotta start this way. all i can do is take your advice and get there one day. i really appreciate the advice in this forum. it is unbelievable. i will take the parts of your advice that i can. backups and redundancy, cpu stuff and sw, all that stuff i have or plan to get.
as far as a camera, think im going to scratch my budget. i am thinking of getting two 40d's.
as far as lenses, i am definately going to take everyones advice and get a 50mm 1.4 or the like. also an 85 1.8/ the 24-70mm 2.8 looks perfect but i dont have that loot yet.
thanks for offering to let me shoot your stuff and try if out. thats very generous of you. maybe one day i might take you up on it, closer to purchase time.
*what do you guys know about the rumor that canon is dropping another dslr at pma this year? or maybe that should be its own thread. |

the contract is no prob. i had an extremely well worded contract made for me by a corporate lawyer friend of the fam who is very fond of sue happy incidents like wedding mishaps with vendors. |

Please know that Prof_fate or myself aren't trying to discourage anyone from becoming a wedding photographer. We are simply trying to show you the reality of being one. There is much cost that goes into becoming a wedding photographer, and also much stress.
We also know that people can only afford so much equipment, etc. In this case, you must think long and hard. You may do a $500 wedding, but she may think she deserves the world. If that is the case, and she is unhappy with the photos, the s*&^ will hit the fan. The $500 dollars you walk away with will turn around into court fees, lawyer fees, etc etc. We just want everyone to be smart about it.
Pay your dues, Be an assistant, 2nd shooter, etc. Don't be a wedding photographer because you think it is easy money. Do it because you love it and enjoy it...

IF they do, it'll be a 5D replacement, more than likely. Seeing that they have upgraded EVERYthing else fairly recently, it's the only thing left.

Either that or a new Rebel, the 400D is getting up to the end of it's lifecycle.

The obvious answer is don't sell yourself for more than you are. Be upfront that you are a beginner and your price reflects that. And, let me say this right up front... there are worse things than NOT getting a gig - like getting one!

fortunately, i am ethical and will be up front with brides. i will not mismanage expectations and will not hesitate to turn down a gig in their interest. since this is an additional source of income and not a primary source, my financial needs will not trump a bride's desires. |

+1! Amen to that. Sometimes the cheapest brides end up being the worst ones of them all! They normally are the ones who expect the world.

RENT!
Buy your 2 bodies and a couple primes, then rent (or borrow) a couple 2.8 zooms until you can afford to drop the $$ on lenses of your own. |

Call your local shops to see if they rent, what they rent, and what their rates are. If theres nothing local, look online.
One of my local shops rents both Canon and Nikon gear, with the 2.8 zooms (24-70, 70-200) going for 35 a day each. Other lenses / flashes are cheaper.
You can shoot a wedding with a 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 (non IS) for a whopping 60 bucks. Youd have to shoot 50 weddings before youd be saving money by owning those lenses.

Jmnuggy also has his own rental website, you could probably PM him if you wanted more information.

awesome. i am definately renting lenses until i can afford my own. that totally solves the lens situation. now, i just have to make one last decision:
d200+d80
or
40d + xti
any arguements? |

Nikon... so hot right now!
(if you do Canon, I would go 30D / XT, btw...) |

BTW, I would go with an XT over an XTi for the lesser camera. You're really not going to gain any benefit from the XTi.
