I got a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 for Christmas! Now I want to make sure I take care of it right, since it's my first large, fast telephoto. So, a few questions:

Since it has a tripod collar, obviously the tripod mounts to this. But does this mean that I shouldn't carry the camera by the strap while this lens is mounted? I heard someone ( scalvert?) say once that they stuck the tripod collar foot in their belt while carrying theirs - is this always necessary?

Anything else I should know so I don't accidentally hurt it?

30D body isn't a lightweight. You can let it hang there, though it's easier to keep a hand on the lens rather than having it smash into your body (or something else). Or catch the mount in your pocket, whatever.

If it's comfortable, then yes, carry it on the strap. However, I would recommend checking the strap before every shooting session--making sure it isn't fraying at any point on the strap (especially where it connects to the camera body).

This may be a good time for an OpTech Pro Loop strap. The neoprene in it really takes some of the weight off your neck/shoulders. It also has quick-release buckles when you need to remove the strap (e.g. tripod on a breezy day)

Fritz (kirbic) has always recommended using the tripod collar to tuck into your pocket as you carry it at your side. It helps relieve the weight.

You can safely hang the whole package from your neck by the strap; the camera/lens will point down naturally, and there won't be any significant stress on the mount. However, I never carry mine (Canon 70-200 f/4L) that way; it's a lot easier to keep it in your hand, and anyway I'm always using a tripod with the long lens so I just carry the whole rig slung over my shoulder.

The purpose of the tripod collar is not to avoid stress on the mount, but rather to balance the whole package on the tripod head so it is more stable. If you use the camera mount instead, the whole thing is very front-heavy and it cans et up like harmonic vibrations that take a while to go away and mess your shots up. Like if you kick the tripod foot, or if there's a big gust of wind.

I usually carry mine (70-200 f/4L) with my hand on it. And if I don't have my hand on it, it's tucked into my belt or pocket to take the weight off my neck and also to make the thing stay put and not swing around. I often carry the whole thing by just the tripod mount too, so you won't damage either the lens or the body. If I don't use the tripod collar when on a tripod, the 350D does groan a bit when you let the lens go...doesn't seem to be overly happy about it. It's perfectly fine when mounted to the collar though.

Speaking of tripod collars, can one be added to the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM lens?

I don't think so because you don't have any room on the lens for it---too bad i have 1 too and it is hard to get it to set right on a tripod the 200 balances very nicely

Nope, can't get a collar for that one.

I'll second that - the Op Tech straps are brilliant. I carry my 100-400 about using one all the time.

Thank you all for your input! It's good to know I can carry it without having to worry about stressing the mount. And I suspect that most of the time, I will be holding it, or have the ring foot in my belt. But now I know for sure :-)
