Well, don't be too quick to back off. You heard the old saw about the young man on a corner in New York?

He's there for his first time and he got disoriented, so he stopped a passerby and asked, "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?"

The passerby just smiled and said, "Practice, son....practice!"

The only way to get better at this hobby/profession/passion/art/craft/whatever is to shoot, shoot, shoot!

You'll get a lot of crap, but after a while you'll start to notice what you do and the things you like.

Another really good way to sharpen your eye is to vote on as many challenges as you can.

When you look at 200+ images that are trying to express a similar theme, you'll unconsciously start to pick up little details that help you. You'll notice hot spots from overexposure, shallow depth of field, bokeh, and a host of other things I had not had as strengths of my own until I got here even after over 25 years of dinking around as an amateur hack photographer.

This place is awesome!

My score has been steadily slipping all day.

You'd think Santa would bring me a nice score; I've been a good boy! LOL!!!

i'll definitely keep shooting. i just don't think i'm ready for these 'challenges'. i love looking through and voting on them, though. i think i've voted on every one in every challenge for the last 3 weeks. i've been trying to make comments on and off today. i hope they are somewhat helpful.

this is a really great forum. i'm new here but i feel quite welcome and i can see there's a lot i can learn from reading them.

I thought my entry was pretty good and was hoping for the high 5's. It peaked at 5.33 and now it's down to 5.24. I wish the low voters would leave some feedback as to why it is not better in their opinion. I've gotten 2 positive comments with only a small criticism in one of them.

I finally finished up all my commenting and voting on the Wabi-Sabi challenge and this one is next. (I'm either gonna have a bunch of people liking me for the feedback, or cussing my name.)

Hey, I feel the Christmast spirit, I will go and vote now and give you all 10s :-)

Well, at least I am not a troll ... be ready with your update button!

I need to finish voting also, didn't get around all of them yesterday.

Yesterday is such a strange word, on a site with users from all over the world!

Regarding the voting, there are some really nice pictures. But Christmas spirit or not, I find it hard to give scores much higher than 5 if I don't see any perspective - even if it is a nice shot.

Maybe someone here can correct my perception of perspective ... put it into perspective, if you like, but if I see a picture which is just a close-up (but with no perspective effect), or a picture with no sense of perspective, like a flat landscape picture, then ... it is a DNMC to me ...

Maybe someone is thinking "out of the box"; maybe the perspective isn't visual, it's metaphorical; or allegorical; or lyrical. Look at the image and judge the image. If I see something that I immediately think doesn't meet the challenge, I look again; and then again; and then assume if I still don't see it, it's because I missed it, not because it isn't there. I at least give the image a chance (more than 1.5 seconds or whatever the average view prior to vote is here). The photographers who've submitted deserve at least that much.

You DO seem to be getting slapped around a bit.

Welcome to DPC! LOL!!!

By the way..

Isn't this thread in the wrong section?

Shouldn't it be in Current Challenge?

Looking forward to see which one it is :-)

Done voting, a few 4s (no perspective plus dull picture), one 10, the rest stockastically in between ...

Tanja, I don't know. <sheepish grin> I started it, and "Challenge Results" seemed appropriate at the time (we are discussing real-time results, yes?)...whereas "Current Challenge" is for the submission period for a challenge (so that folks can discuss what their entries should be). I could be wrong--it wouldn't a first for me! :-(

That makes sense. On a properly calibrated monitor your image looks fine, but on an improperly calibrated one (most monitors, actually) it is likely to "look too dark"; a properly calibrated monitor is brighter than most people like for "normal" usage.

I have multiple computers, so I'll prepare my entry on my calibrated monitor, then view it on an uncalibrated, general monitor (like most web surfers would have). Then, if it is too dark, I try to find a nice looking half-way point.

For my own photos (non-DPC entries), I forgo the other monitor and save/print from the calibrated-biased image.

With my first challenge (Seeing the Unseen) topping out at an average of 4.793 I am happy to find this second entry currently doing better (albeit a mere morale builder).

...............there is a long way to go before we reach the finish line so there is plenty of time for ups and downs.
