Turn your cheap remote into a timelapse remote.
I bought a Cactus radio trigger here ($30). This remote allows you to trigger the 40D (and possibly the other models listed as compatible) in continuous shooting mode. You can use a bug in the 40D/remote combination to create time-lapse photography without tethering the camera to a computer or using an expensive timer remote.
Here's how:
+Connect the remote to the camera.
+Set the camera to continuous shooting.
+Choose settings that will quickly fill the buffer:
-H2 speed on the 40D gives you 6.5 FPS to start with.
-RAW allows for roughly 20 images until the 40Ds buffer is filled.
+Press and hold the shutter release on the remote. The camera starts to shoot away at the FPS you selected. If it doesn't shoot at all, switch to manual focusing or check whether the remote works at all.
+Once the buffer is full, the FPS will go down to around 1FPS.
+Now let go of the shutter release on the remote.
+If your camera/remote combo has the same bug as mine, the camera will not stop shooting until you press the remote's shutter release again, or until the CF is full. (You may of course attach the camera to a laptop for extended HD space, but then you could use the EOS utilities in the first place.)
