I made some studded tires for my mountain bike a few years ago. The bike originally a '98 Specialized Rockhopper, but aside from the frame, seat post and handlebars I've replaced and upgraded everything (due to damage or wear). I used to go out and ride trails at lunch with a coworker. The studded tires really made a difference when the ground was frozen and for crossing frozen streams. Sadly, I haven't used the studded tires in a few years.

In the intervening years I got a used road/racing bike- a ~'93 Cannondale R900. The first time riding it was amazing- the tightness, the quick acceleration, the precision. Lunch time rides are now mostly on it.

How about night riding, anyone have any good photos? It's been a few years since I've done it, and now I'm regretting never having brought a camera. Out here on the Eastern edge of the US EST time-zone, it's pitch dark by 5pm in winter, so riding after work meant riding with lights. I used to do this 20-30 mile loop with a few buddies that was maybe two-thirds offroad, including some technical stuff that I wouldn't ride in daylight. But somehow it all seemed doable in the halogen helmet-light beam. The downside was that ice is sometimes invisible in that light, like the time I hit a patch on a small bridge and went over the side! Fortunately it was the upstream side so the bike caught on the side of the bridge. I managed to claw myself back up and only got half soaked. The ride back was pretty cold, but no frostbite.

Don't do much mountain biking anymore, but still commute by bike when I can. Here's one from when I was still in MTB mode:

I have a Camelbak in which I can carry the Rebel and the kit lens. I forget which model. When I do, I don't use the Camelbak to also carry water, though - not sure I want to risk soaking the camera!

I am a long time photographer, road cyclist and mountain biker. Here is a link to an article I wrote a few years ago that was published in South American Explorer Magazine.
