Canon has surpassed the 30 million camera mark for EOS SLR cameras, and has surpassed the 10 million camera mark for EOS DSLR cameras.
It's Canon's 70th anniversary as a company, and the 20th anniversary of the EOS camera. For EOS DSLRs, it's been only seven years.
Check out the stats here, from Canon's official press release.
By the way, did you guess what Canon's first DSLR camera was? It was the EOS D30, in the year 2000.

The real question is who is still using a D30 or D60? |

That thing was huge! It's wild how much only 12 years has changed digital photography and computing for that matter.

Considering it cost $30,000, it better be sweet and not just look it. |

It is interesting to note that, in this recent press release from Canon, it states:
"In 2000, Canon formally ushered in the age of the digital SLR camera with the introduction of the EOS D30..."
I wonder what the discrepancy is? Besides the press release, even Canon's online museum concurs with the 1995 date, except they refer to the EOS DCS 3.

Those are Kodak/Canon hybrids. They mount Kodak imaging components on a Canon film body. The D30 was the first all-Canon dSLR.

I actually used a D30 (all 3.2 mp) in July 2006 when it was lent to me by the owner of a campground we were staying at. He had shot photography professionally for 20 years before retiring to the campground. With a Sigma 70-200 2.8 lens, the pics were incredible. The 3.2 mp would make for difficult prints, but I was very amazed at the quality and colors from such an old model.

The DCS5 was released in March of 1995. Nikon mount models predated that by 6 or 7 years I believe.
The DCS5 was the first EOS mount DSLR as I posted earlier, but the imaging system was not made by Canon, it was made by Kodak. Kodak made the sensor and the related systems and integrated them with the Canon film body.
The D30 was the first DSLR with a Canon sensor and was built and sold, by Canon, as a Canon camera. The DCS series cameras were sold by Kodak.

Hello spazmo,
where did you find the information that the DCS5 was introduced in march 1995? I also do remember that I have read that when the DCS cameras wghere introduced but I do nit remember the date. I've just read that the DCS5 was introduced in 1994 (without month or day). That was written by a former engeneer of the Kodak developing team.
Do you know something else?
Thanks, Tom |
