I have a friend that has a Nikon D50 with a kit lens 18-55. We were in a room were I was shooting at 1600 ISO at 80shutter speed. His camera would take photos up close at 18, but when he zoomed in to 55 his camera would not focus and take the picture. Can anyone tell me why. The only thing I could think of is does the D50 have the motor in it or is the motor in the lens.

Thanks, Jeremy

I can't say for sure without seeing the situation, but it sounds like you were in a dark space, and it was just too dark for the autofocus to work well. The 18-55 is a variable aperture (f/3.5-5.6) lens. At 18mm, the widest aperture will be f/3.5. At 55mm, it will be f/5.6, which lets a lot less light into the camera. The autofocus needs light to work well. Some cameras need more light than others.
