When I first looked at it I thought that there was loads of things there to look at. I didn't know where to focus on first. There's so much going on in the background it takes a few seconds to see what you have actually focussed on.
The lighting on the right hand side (RHS) is stonger than that of the left hand side(LHS), so the lamp looks a little unbalanced.
The cropping is just a little too much on the RHS, you've just cur off the handle.
So, for the good points... :-)
It's good that you haven't put the lamp in the middle of the shot, also I like the background. Looks like a poster, if it is a real place, I can see lots of good shots there.
Didn't vote myself on this shot, would have given it a 7.

what focal length did you use?
i thought the BG was too busy - but a bit more blur may have helped with that.
you might be able to get more blur,
1) by moving the lamp away from the print in the BG.
2) using a longer focal length with the smallest available aperture

i dunno then- you wont get the whole thing in the frame maybe by zooming...
in general a longer focal length will give shallower DOF at the same aperture than a shorter focal length.

You really don't believe that right? What about all the challenges we held long before we allowed anything beyond the 'basic' rules? There was always three ribbon winners then also. |

The background doesn't look real, more like a painting or something? That bugged me a little about it. And also the background blends in too much with the subject. So get around this, you should have:
1) Zoom more on the subject and use a large F-stop, like F2.8 or something.
2) Then, in photoshop you should have selected the background and desaturated it a little. This would give more contrast between it and the subject. Item 1 above would also help with this.

The focal lenght you got in the EXIF is the one of the camera. If you want to know where you are you have to convert it into 35mm values. Your camera have a multiplication factor of 3.93 so if you want to know the real foacle lenght of your photo you got to multiply the EXIF focal lenght by 3.93 wich give 106mm.
The maximum zoom of your camera is 190mm. so you where zoomed about halfway. if you have zoomed more from a longer distance between you and your subject you would have a more shallow depth of field.
