I'll probably get stomped on for this, but I'm all for the expurgated versions, at least for bedtime stories when my kids were really young. They have enough to worry about in the real world, between 9/11, school shootings, war in Iraq, a school bus crash in our district that killed our the son of someone we know, my wife's MS, and a little heart issue I had a year ago. Oh, and the looming burden of telling them as young Jews about the real nature of the Holocaust, far beyond "the Germans were mean to the Jews."

Not that our burden is particularly heavier than anyone else's. We all have stuff we have to help our kids consider and absorb as they're ready. I just don't see the need to add whatever horrors lurk in the "real" folk tales.

We're honest to the point they can handle it, though, and I'd be willing to discuss something like the Match Girl with my 10 year old in the light of day. But my 7-year-old at bedtime? Nope.

As an adult, I'm curious, though. Anyone got a link to an online summary?

That's a 1914 translation. Here's the end of "Snow White":

Then the wicked woman uttered a curse, and was so wretched, so utterly wretched, that she knew not what to do. At first she would not go to the wedding at all, but she had no peace, and must go to see the young Queen. And when she went in she knew Snow-white; and she stood still with rage and fear, and could not stir. But iron slippers had already been put upon the fire, and they were brought in with tongs, and set before her. Then she was forced to put on the red-hot shoes, and dance until she dropped down dead.

I think the Grimm brothers' fairy tales are essentially mutable, not least because they were collected in a variety of forms. Until such time as the boys wrote them down, they belonged to the oral tradition and were as varied as the dialects or, indeed, languages in which they were told.

The Little Match Seller is by Hans Cristian Andersen and he made it up, I think...

Here it is in its original form - first published 1846, or so they say.

So - Christmas Day here is drawing to a close. We've had a very low-key day, just myself, my hubby and our trio of whirlwinds.

I hope nobody on Team Suck got a lump of coal this year, and that everyone had someone special around to celebrate the day with.

Many blessings.

And what's great about fairy tale characters is that they cannot be copyrighted! Disney can't stop you from doing anything you want with Cinderella.

My mother had a set of volumes of fairy tales from the late 1800's that I read as a child (I still have these, although they're falling apart and a bit mildewed at this point) - the tale of Blackbeard was especially terrifying. I remember at the time that I read them being surprised at how the "familiar" tales were a LOT different from those in my Disney books.

I have sold out to the desire for a decent-ish score. Hopefully it will backfire and teach me a lesson. I have a very nice texture shot. I also have a weird but fitting "Hidden City" shot. I've entered the safer of the two.

On the other hand, my Free Study, which has been entered since mid-month, will not score well and will in fact be seen as a snapshot. Not sure this totally redeems me, but I do offer that up as penance.

I'm in for stupid gifts. You will all recognise my model, lol! My FS has been in since the middle of the month as well. I expect a 5 on it.

Don't we all figure that melethia is basically a Team Suck poser these days? She's close to the top far too often.

Hey, we have a lurker ... er... I mean visitor. Must have come by for a cool, refreshing drink. Welcome to the oasis, Doc.

Hmmm... I suppose you didn't check out my recent eBay entry. And you might want to keep an eye on Noraneko and skewsme as well. Though I'm pretty sure we (collectively) won't be challenging you (individually) for ribbon count, it is kinda fun to sneak up to the upper ranges now and then... :-)

I am a bit ashamed I chickened out on my Hidden City entry, though. It's definitely not as pretty as most of the entries:

Maybe it is just my "bah humbug" coming out in me. But I am getting very tired of looking at the results and seeing photos in the top 25% which do not even remotely fit the challenge description. If everything was supposed to be a free study....they would all be free studies!

Why do I even bother with challenge descriptions? Maybe I will do that as an experiment. I will shoot for a month or so and just submit whatever I think are my best photos, entering as many challenges as possible and see how I do, without paying attention the the challenge description at all.

My BITE entry finished about where I thought it would, so I am not complaining about that. I am complaining that so many of the shots are certainly not "every day". Just as only here at DPC can we have a challenge called "2 second exposure" and have top finishes that are not even close to being a 2 second exposure.... something needs to be done or I need to find somewhere else to display my work. :(

I generally shoot for the challenges specifically, but to others it often appears I shoehorn. I think that's because I'm basically warped, but that's beside the point.

It's taught me, though, to take a longer look at some things to see how they might fit the challenge assuming the photographer is half as warped in their thinking as I am. Sometimes I can see it, sometimes not. For "Beauty in the Every Day", I wasn't as kind to gorgeous landscapes and such - to me that wasn't in the spirit of an "everyday" thing. Landscapes and sunsets are always beautiful - it's not a hidden feature you have to find to present in a unique way to make them so. Not that any of that makes sense, I'm sure.

At any rate, go back and take a look at some you don't think meet the challenge - see if there's another angle. And we can always discuss entries, as long as we're not personally attacking or being rude - it is a learning site.

We had four Team Suck members on the front page one week!

I snuck away with enough internet access to get the weekly results online. Congrats to noraneko for the top score this week! Lots of great shots from Team Suck.

5.3 after 10 votes--a decent way to start given I hadn't entered anything in about six weeks. Thanks to rheverly and purpleflutterby13 for their help with this one.

Here's one from June 2007 (still taking up space in my portfolio, but I don't mind so long as I get to show it off every once in awhile):

Ernie, I agree (as usual) wholeheartedly with what Deb said; if I don't see a connection between a shot and the description, I look again; then I look again; then, if I still don't see it, I assume it's my fault and that I've missed it somewhere in the subtlety of the shot. Sure, sometimes there are shoehorns (and the examples Deb gave are good ones), but usually I agree in looking for the warped (though I wish I personally was more warped than I apparently am); this, by the way, takes way more than the time "normal" voters give to images here, but I try to give that when I look.

RobM, glad to try to help (as I am whenever I can).

The BITE challenge was a tricky one with regard to 'fitting the challenge description'. There is even a mild oxymoron in the title, where we are asked to portray something ordinary, while the very act of photographing it and even more so that of presenting it for many eyes, necessarily makes it extraordinary. It's all very zen, and I think team suck done good there.

I got two favourites on my perspective thingy *pride*

Aha! DrAchoo is a wannabee sucker but keeps getting frustratingly high votes. There, there.
