Raw files can be changed. But we don't do that do we?

Changes to the original RAW file?

Heh now that I've finished snorting coffee out of my nose, thanks for that experience btw, that was perhaps the only snippet of information that sunk in at uni (and now Mary has me hitting the textbooks to see if I got that right). Oh except I did learn that I truly do suck at photography which is casting some doubt over whether I continue to torture myself or become a cleaner for a living :(

In PS CS2, anyway, you can choose your conversion settings, and it saves those in an XMP file, but the RAW file itself remains untouched.

Please do share what you know.

Wow. Look what I started. Then I went away :) Glad you enjoyed, Deb, see how it gets on. Remember, I tried it before and hated it, as it is miserable at sharpening (both smart sharpen and unsharp mask are lightyears ahead of it) and you can't add borders of any kind (at least that I've found).

As for reject, press "x" while the photo is being viewed (or highlighted in thumbnail), and it gets marked for rejection. Press "p" to "pick" the image (good for later using the "pick" filter). Press "u" to "unmark" the image from either pick or reject. This works in both library and develop mode.

Pressing 1-5 while the image is being viewed or is selected sets the rating from 1-5; pressing 6-9 sets colors (red, yellow, green, blue in that order). No need to click each time, just use the keyboard shortcuts.

Oh, and it's useful to have a "current" library catalog and an archive (one or more); lightroom works better on a regular basis with a smaller database (or so I've read). I created a library catalog for 2007 and will do the same once 2008 ends.

So, um, that's what I know. :)

Best,

Bruce

Sorry for the double post (everyone editing their birds and not posting here?), but two quick things: trying to choose my birds entry; anyone care to take a look (in the next hour or so before I go to bed)? Please PM me . . .

And . . . I now have five DNMC comments on my "Six" entry (none used that term, but that's what they said using other words) and there's a surprising (to me) connection among three of them . . .

//edited to add// I got a quick response on my request for help, so I'm all set!//

I'm in for birds. It's going to bomb. Weather's been crap this week, so no chance to go out for better.

Best of ... is holding steady at 5.2 (with a favorite - thanks Deb !)

Six is crapping out at 4.5 with lots of (sadly accurate) neg. comments.

I just came back from my first night of fire spinning in Cambridge - oh my god, it was amazing!!! There was music, and fire, and stars, and we were next to the river... Just beautiful. It was weird, it was like there was a part of me missing until I saw fire swirling around me again... And suddenly, Cambridge really does feel like home.

Other happy related things - I'm part of a fire troupe here now, so I'll have a bunch of shows coming up relatively soon. Oh, and also, I've just made friends with about 20 willing models - expect some more fire shots before long! :D

Hee, I'm so happy! :) :) :)

Don you do like to walk on the edge, I'll cross everything that you hold that 6.

Woot Jelena I can't wait to see some fire shots.
01/27/2008 07:59:20 PM · #1186
Lucky you Jelena! 20 new models! So glad you're happy, firespinning is obviously your element!

Don got my legs crossed that you keep that 6...hang in there O noble leader...

I'm in for Birds. I'm actually quite proud as my victim...err...subject was a good 8 ft away but I managed to get lots of detail with the Nikon.

I've given up on Childhood; still sucking at 4.3ish. Someone please tell me why once Childhood ends?!

well, I am in for Birdies as well. I actually went back and forth between 3 different shots that I took today, but I might use one of the others for free study. (it is a different species)

my childhood is not breaking 5....grrrrr.

my Best of is rockin though...but nowhere near the 7.5 you would likely need for a ribbon in that one.

ETA I found a secret "bird haven" today, but it is 2 hours drive from home.... oh I shot for architecture today too but not sure if I like any of them enough to enter it.

Man, I've lost track of how many TSers did well in Best of 2007 and Six. I'll just focus on the tippy top of what seems to be a very long list: Les' ribbon, Catherine's top 10 and Deb's double-whammy of a top 10 and 92%, and Ernie's top 10%.

Congrats to all of you, but also congrats to everyone on TS who learned anything this year, had fun shooting a new kind of image, earned a personal best, or taught someone something. I continue to be inspired by all of you, so here's to a great 2008 year with Team Suck!

Results. For your breakfast (or dinner) viewing. Goes well with cream cheese and bagel.

So this is where we come to commiserate when you we have shots that others at DPC label "DNMC" (or some similar moniker, such as "title dependent"); but where do we go when three of five of those comments on a shot are from Team Suck members? Suggestions?

I see two possible solutions:

1. painful self-examination
2. rationalization

To help you with 2, think of it this way: if team suck members think it's dnmc, then maybe that means it's not dnmc, if you catch my drift...

p.s. I worked hard on my bird and now it's in low 5 hell, I think because it's not pretty? and doesn't have bright pretty colors? grr

I see Occam's scalpel slashing the whole universe up in megapixels.

Various strategies are available to the modern anti-hero, e.g.

*well I don't know what meets your challenge, boy...

*you call that a dnmc? This is (etc)
