Mine's on 5.5. Which is alright, but I really quite like the shot, so I'm not that happy about it. lol I should learn not to get attached to shots, but I just can't help it...

Btw, for the Best of 2007 challenge, does it need to be something noone's seen before? Or is it ok to stick in a shot that's been sitting in my portfolio for a while?
01/14/2008 09:06:38 AM · #779
Certainly last year plenty of the highest ranking photos had been in portolios previously. I don't see any problem, as it is natural that if it is your best of the year you will have placed it in your portfolio. I would suggest that you move the portfolio version to your workshop until voting is complete.

Thanks, cool, done that :) I'll be intrigued to see how it does.

Sounds like a good strategy to me too, but I'd be interested to hear what any lurking SC member might think about it... :)

I'm not an SC, but I do know it is allowed. I did it last year and I did it again this year. Just hide your portfolio image first.

eta: You must not have used it as a challenge entry previously though.

'nuff said! ;p

btw way Jeffrey and Barbara, yes, new bf...wonderful man, into energy healing, attending Barbara Brennan School of Healing, also owns a lightweight airplane currently in Halifax. Very very mature despite being five years younger than me (but he chased me, so he's a cougar hunter...besides cougars are mostly WEALTHY older women who actively pursue younger men so I don't really meet the criteria, lol) and not camera-shy like a couple I could name.

This has been gradually climbing from a 5.1 with 10 votes last night. I hope the trend continues.

I'm happy for you, Susan. This is a great beginning to the new year.

two low scores that I was quite unpleasantly surprised by. but the difference is that I look at my first page of challenges and I'm proud of every shot on that page. Each one was the shot I wanted to take, looking the way I want it to look. There is no corresponding lift of scores, however. And that is why I feel so at home here (on this thread, not on dpc). :)

It's funny, I swear both my photography and the post-processing I do has gotten radically better over the last year. I mean, I started the year not knowing what an aperture was, whereas now I fell pretty competent behind a camera, my shots are technically sound, I know how to pull off what I want to get in a shot. Weirdly though, my scores haven't shifted a bit. And all my top highest scoring shots are still the ones taken with my P&S.
But I love photography, it's making me look at the world in different ways, and I'm getting what I want from it. So yeah, I feel at home here :)

I agree with you on all counts. My scores stay the same but I feel that I'm better at this then a year ago. I think my problem is that I think out side the box and don't have the same thought process that others do. But I'm still here learning and having fun.

It's great that you have learned so much in the past year. I have too, and that's why I love DPC. But as with you, all but one of my top 5 shots were taken with my P&S camera. I have had a severe learning curve (and set back) with the DSLR. However, I feel confident that in 2008 I will replace at least a couple of those P&S shots on my top row. Let's make that a goal for 2008. How many do you think we could reasonably shoot for?

Sounds like a good goal :) As tempted as I am to say "Hell yeah, all 5", something tells me I'll be looking at that Spinning shot on my front page for a long time to come... Something like 3 might be reasonable though? I mean, a whole year is ahead of us, right? :)

I can definitely see a growth in my skills over the year.

Proof ?

This was actually taken mid-2006

And this, taken at the end of 2007

Same here!! I can take technically sound pix now but my scores still tend to meander around in the 4s, occasionally surfacing in the 5s... Dunno whether to do 6 or Best of 2007...probably 6 cause at least I can count that high ;-)
01/14/2008 06:04:28 PM · #794
Chalk me up with the group of us that have hit "the wall" photographically and cannot seem to make that next step. I am frustrated seeing my top pic being one from 2006!

My main goal is the get that top pic knocked back a couple spots.
01/14/2008 06:08:52 PM · #795
I'll probably never be technically sound, lol. And, I'm sure I'll never fit the pretty picture profile. But I like my pictures. It makes me happy. My scores suck and sometimes that gets to me. But, I can live with it. My current scores are a 4.5 and a 4.9 ;)
01/14/2008 06:21:53 PM · #796
I have given up on being technical sound. Too many other things to do

I am entering the following photo to a local Audubon contest, same as my 3erd highest challenge entry, reprocessed and sized for 8By10. What do you think.
01/14/2008 06:40:42 PM · #798
I think the Audobon will love it.

As a photo I think it is excellent. Great exposure, sharpness, composition, I love the photo. However be aware that an Audobon contest might "look down" on a photo of one of the most common birds, this being a female mallard. For a contest of this type the subject might play a role as well as the beauty of the photograph.

I hope it does very well for you. :) Let us know what happens.

LOL Ernie, after a year here I have developed quite a tough skin. Besides having a 200mm on a full frame camera dosent exactly give me a lot of reach.
