If you write metrical verse, //www.poetandcritic.yuku.com ΓΆ€” I am one of the "owners" of this board, but it's pretty quiet right now.

If you write free verse, there's a world of sites out there but I don't frequent them.

The heavyweight in metrical verse, with a separate free verse board, is //www.ablemuse.com/erato ΓΆ€” for years I was active there, but it is VERY cliquish and hard for anyone who lacks a thick skin.

Don't tell them that you think they should have ribboned (that's too easy and can look too flippant); instead, look at the images and tell them why they reach you. The positive energy you get from truly looking at and explaining your feelings and reactions to something you like will quickly overwhelm the frustrations you're feeling and you'll hopefully start to move in your own artistic direction (rather than fighting with the entity that is DPC).

"Bruce", I think this is some of the best advice I've read. It will make a great New Years Resolution. Thank you.

A completely useless factoid - I passed a milestone. No, not a kidney stone, a milestone. My comments made stat is over 15,000 at least until the next odd reset.

Unfortunately even that does not seem to change things.

Oh well, I can't change it, so pass me a beer.

I would dearly love to buy you a beer, Ernie. It'll have to be virtual though, cheers.

Thanks, Mary for the links, but I don't find Haiku satisfying to write on a regular basis, and Don's site doesn't really link to sites for users posting their own stuff (at least I didn't see any that do that).

Thanks, Robert, I have no idea what kind of poetry I write. I had actually stumbled across both Erato and poetandcritic (not knowing that was you there, by the way), but given that I have no poetic knowledge, was stopped fairly cold by words like sestet and enjambment, and having no idea how to begin to discover what rules I should follow to work within the realm of metrical poetry. I just write, and not very often, but would like to do so more, to be able to create the shadows, rather than just capture them when they decide to show themselves . . .

Perhaps I need to buy a book about poetry and criticism, to learn a bit of structure for my musings. Perhaps that's the academic in me thinking I can learn poetry from a book, rather than from the world around me.

In any event, I appreciate the pointers.

Best all,

Bruce

*wandering back in again* Hate to whine, esp as so many others out there are having their own serious problems with family etc now, but right now I am so lonely and frustrated with the whole is-he-or-isn't-he-into-me? thing that it's driving me absolutely insane.

May I suggest taking the bold approach and just asking him out or making a move on him? Perhaps he is just a shy guy like me, and has trouble reading the signals from a woman. I cannot picture him not be interested, you are an intelligent, kind, beautiful woman after all. If I was not 300km away I would certainly be wanting to get to know you better. ;)

I am sending you that snail mail today that we discussed, but it is going regular mail so it might take a week or so to get there.

Stay positive.

Ernie

*blushing* Aww, thanks Ernie! :-) But the thing is, I have been trying to talk to him etc and just not getting any feedback at all...he said we'll talk sometime, and when I asked that might be, he said 'Sometime'. Last night I drove by his place just to see if he was there. He wasn't, but his elder brother was and was able to fill me in a bit.
Soo..here's some new stuff I wish I'd known before...

*he's friends with EVERYONE;
*he already has female friends but basically keeps them all compartmentalized, ie it's unlikely I'll ever meet the girl he was out walking around Kemptville with; he's also friends with the girl who was his nurse when he had his bout with cancer, etc....
*he spreads himself wayyy too thin, so why he wants to add yet another female to his platonic harem is kinda beyond me; and oh yeah
*he has a VERY loose sense of time...it's been a good 8-9 days since he got skittish and bolted on me...I thought that would be ample time for ANY guy to decide if he's seriously interested in a woman or not.

And right now I feel that if I do make any move on him, I won't see him for dust. Or snow.

*SIGH*

SO I'm trying to keep my brain preoccupied but it keeps circling back to him, I wish it didn't.

Anyway. My Textures shot is just a hair over 5, I'll be uploading Object, and plan to shoot Fire. When in doubt bury yourself in work!

Having a boyfriend is not a prerequisite for survival. I haven't had one for, ummm, several decades, and I'm still here. (Though we did get a mortar about 100-150 yards away the other night. THAT was exciting.)

I highly recommend the fictional boyfriend. A character in a book, or better yet, one in a TV series. If the latter, you know when he'll be by, you know how long he'll stay, and you don't have to clean the house or even get all dressed up if you don't want to. He won't talk back and won't tell you not to spend money on expensive camera stuff. Of course, it's highly unlikely he'll take out the trash or do the grocery shopping either, so there are trade-offs.

And apparently Don is rich! This is a current CNN headline on the website:

Man leaves $50,000 posthumous tip

Nice!

Hahahaha! Good advice Deb!

Actually I have had fictional bfs...I do know a bf isn't necessary for survival, didn't really have a REAL relationship til my ex, Johnny. (The previous bf was just some guy I kept going back to, like an idiot).

But even just a platonic male friend would be nice to have around. I grew up with 3 elder brothers and their friends, and my own best friends growing up were boys. For the most part I'm more comfortable around guys. I do have far-flung female friends but many of them are raising families etc themselves....

Anyway, thanks for the advice and the giggle, I needed it! BTW the mortar thingy sounds like it was pretty exciting. Did it rattle the pods?
12/29/2007 10:44:02 AM · #285
We're in trailers here (pods are in Kuwait) and oh boy, it rattled the trailers! Has kind of a nifty rolling aftershock thing that goes with it. This morning there was one probably about a half a mile away and I got to see the ring of smoke as it rose into the sky - nice calm clear morning for stuff like that. (Too far to get a picture of it, but that's fine by me!)

Sounds almost like fun, lol! Read your list of resolutions for when you leave said warm environs, Deb. Hope you're able to fulfill them all!

Rosemary, glad you're back (sorry pun NOT intended)hope you can get hubby to do all the work til you're better!

OMG! That's what late nights and lack of caffeine will get you, lol. I kind of wish at least half of it would fall off though ;P

Get Tim Steele's All the Fun's in How You Say a Thing ΓΆ€” great book, easy to read (as this sort go). He's a friend, actually, and a fine teacher.

I can be your fictional bf if you want. I'll even write you poems. Assuming Deb doesn't mind; she's my fictional gf currently, but the fiction's all mine :-)
