well I entered the stupid gift and have a stupid score of 5.4583. Sorry I haven't been entering challenges lately, my main hard drive crashed and I can't access my secondary one (with ALL of my pictures on it!! plus photoshop) so I've been stuck on my mom's old computer with her crappy editing system :( *sniff*) I can only hope that my pics will be recovered before the December Free Study and ESPECIALLY the 2007 Challenge.

Very sorry to hear that. I wish there was something I could do to help the situation. Try to stay positive, and I am sure that your prayers and healing vibes are being felt by your sister. Hang in there.

I'm sorry Deb.
On a related note, my mom's back in hospital also - in the ICU after having emergency surgery to correct a perforated ulcer. Doesn't sound bad, but add in a low immune system (she just finished chemotherapy), current brain swelling (her cancer has spread to her brain) and an aneurysm (non-operable), and I can imagine her docs were shaking in their boots about treating her. Mom and my step-dad were being prepared "for the worst".

Lea, that just basically sucks, and not in a good way. No more I can say other than you have my heartfelt sympathies. In a perfect world, no one would get sick, but even moreso over the holidays. Tends to tarnish the whole festive nature a bit. |

Melethia and Kashi, you both have my thoughts and prayers. I can not begin to understand how hard this must be. |

Deb and Lea, you both have my thoughts with you & yours. I actually do know how hard it is to deal with. My grandfather was in the hospital for every holiday every year for many years. My sympathies for your frustration at not being able to be there. If either of you need to vent, please PM me. I'm always available to listen. |

Update - I got to a phone in the free Verizon trailer they set up for the holidays (very nice of them) and called my sister this evening (morning for her). She sounded halfway decent and was glad for the call. Seems she sent her hubby off to visit his parents as planned and drove herself to the hospital for this trip. She's a character and a half, I tell ya. She's hoping to get out tomorrow so she can get some work done before she has to go back for surgery. Anyway, I feel a bit better now that I've talked to her. Hopefully she does, too. |

Sometimes that's all to takes to cheer you up, and her too, clearly. My day's kinda sucking along right now, but dahkota just made me feel a lot better - she left a great, well-thought-out comment on my Little Match Girl (as did levyj, thanks Jeffrey). |

Deb, I'm glad you got to talk to your sister. I'm sure you are feeling much better now. It sounds like she's got it together.
Now, can anyone explain what the isolation by contrast thingy means? Is there a thread on this (I couldn't find one through search)? I hate getting slammed because I don't understand something, lol. |

Essentially make sure your photo has a clearly defined subject, and that you make the subject stand out in the photo by having it contrasting from the background. So either a dark subject in a mostly light or white photo or vice versa. Or with a contrasting colour, which will work better with complimentary colours. (a blue vase against a red wall for example)
that would be my take on it, but the voters seldom seem to agree with me, so take it for what it cost you...LOL
Actually my BITE entry would be a good example of it.

Two comments on my mediocre Xmas Present shot. Snaffles likes it (that counts for a lot) and someone else thinks it's too creepy. Huh? |

The details for the challenge could be very widely interpreted. In addition to Ernie's examples, I would think that these things might fit:
a beggar in the presence of wealthy passers-by,
an old car in a new car lot,
an infant surrounded by grandparents,
a disabled person with a walker watching a foot race, etc.

Thanks for the replies guys/gals. I'll think some more on it.
My perspective is doing nicely at the 100 vote check in...

It will make my top 5 spot for sure. I'll be glad to get rid of that shoe shot, I'm so sick of looking at that one, lol.
On another note, has anyone ever bought a second hand (used) lens from Adorama? They have some 70-300 for around $70 (Sigma & Quant). I'm anticipating starting a part time job around mid/end of January taking pictures of newborns at a hospital and I'm hoping to make enough to start buying some lenses. The lenses wouldn't be for taking the pictures of the newborns, that's all their equipment.

Someone in a thread on the isolation subject stated that they thought the Alone in a Crowd theme would work.
I understood it to mean more of a contrast of the subject against the background or of anything else in the frame for that matter and I had literally just taken a shot an hour before I saw the description that totally inspired me to enter it right there on the spot. I know I was one of the first four entries, but I actually didn't look to see how many there were 'til later in the morning that I entered.
It's a very distinct presentation, IMO......but will the voters like it?

That is similar to the way that JuliBoc described it as well. I tend to go with more literal interpretations (contrast of colour or tone) to make sure that people "get it". I am neither right nor wrong of course, because when it is left open like that you can shoot almost anything and justify it with the title.
This is a fine example of what really bugs me about DPC challenge descriptions. They leave it so damned open to individual interpretations that no one knows what the heck they meant to begin with. In voting you end up trying to compare apples to palm trees, which I think defeats the purpose of having a challenge description to begin with. Essentially it ends up being yet another free study and the pretty shots will win.
If the challenge was "apples" most folks would take pictures that have something to do with apples. (apples, apples on a tree, apple pie etc) However someone will shoehorn something in by entering a nice cityscape and using a title like "home of apple computers".
Something really needs to be changed about the way they have such vague descriptions. If they were more specific so that everyone was on the same playing field they could also then start to disqualify images for DNMC, which is also long past due.
Ok, end rant.

Contrasting your subject with the rest of the image ... isn't that what we do with just about every shot (well, other than the Image without Subject challenge)? I think this will be just another free study.

Is it just me or is there a real contentious air about the challenges lately?
It just seems like every day I see another thread about why this, that, or the other thing was a PITA 'cause nobody understood it, or the trolls are out of hand, or the description's too vague.....
What's weird is that right now the whole thing couldn't be better from where I sit. I like the offerings and I'm having tremendous success with the challenges as far as hitting the mark, IMO.
Maybe I'm just too weird......
This was my B.I.T.E. entry.....it didn't do well, yet I was really happy with the simplicity of it and how everyday it was.....the repaired post, the tangled vine, and the sagging wire of the fence gave the imperfection aspect.....I was just really pleased, yet the voters didn't care for it much.
I actually thought that it was kind of funny that it didn't do well. I loved the concept of the challenge, and I wa perfectly at ease and happy with this image. So be it! LOL!!!

I think people just get frustrated once in a while. My perspective shot has 6 comments, 4 of which are very good, one kind of down the middle, and 1 DNMC. The DNMC gave me a 1. The score went from 5.9something, to 5.84 in 1 vote. Now, I know it fits the challenge, and have trouble figuring out why someone would think it DNMC, so that's where issues happen. That person is also new to the site. I vented to someone off site, then let it go. But it took quite a few more votes to recover from that 1. |
