I just purchased a new Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM lens yesterday and was wondering if
it's normal for it to make a whirring noise when I depress the shutter to focus?
It's not very loud, and am only wondering since my Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM doesn't make any noise at all.
I just need an answer before I call the camera shop where I purchased it.
Thanks in advance for your time.

I'm pretty sure it's the IS. I can hear it on the 24-105. I'm more surprised you couldn't hear it on the 17-85.

The larger the lens, the larger the gyros. It's normal what you're hearing.

In my opinion, the IS on the 17-85mm lens (I own it) is pretty much worthless. You pay a lot for the lens *because* of the IS, but as you can tell, it doesn't hardly come into play. At 17mm you can pretty much handhold anything you're going to shoot without IS. And even at 85mm it's really not long enough for IS to really become important. But now at 300mm on your other lens ... just try to hold that puppy steady *without* IS and you'll see quite a difference as compared to when it is turned on.

Thanks guys! I knew I could count on you!
And you are right about the 17-85, David. It was the very first lens I purchased and
I guess I was caught up...but I still love that lens too. (But, I'm lovin' the new lens more!!)
Thanks again for your help! You're all the best!
