I dont get it. My camera, f717 has a portrait mode. It says the aperature is 2.4 and the shutter is 1/80 of a second. I was shaking my camera ALOT and the picutre came out razor sharp. I conducted a few more tests, taking pictures as I am moving, 1/80 sec, and the pictures are still razor sharp. I am using a external flash, hvlf1000. (the one sony recommends). Could this have something to do with it? Maybe someone can help explain this to me.

Razor sharp on the cameras lcd or on your computer moniter?

both. I checked the exif on the comptuer and it showed a 1/80 shutter, even though I was shaking the camera violently.

the flash takes place in a very small part of your total open shutter. the flash will effectivly "freeze" the action there. for the rest of the shutter, light will still come in, but it'll be so much lower than the flash's light, that you wont be able to notice it (sometimes, if the ambient light is strong enough, you'll get a ghosting effect around the subjects, from the camera moving).

so should i enlarge the image, to see if theres any "ghosting?"

well, just look at it at 100%, and if you dont see any there, it would mean that the ambient light wasn't strong enough to affect the final image..

ok, so i did a little more testing, and you were right, I shot in full manual mode, aperature 2.0 shutter set at 1/1000, and it turned out MUCH sharper than the 2.0 1/50 portrait mode. In both shots, i had the flash bouncing off the walls. :) So I guess if I shoot any portraits, ill stick to using manual and 1/1000. Im building my "studio" tommorow, as it is a day off from school.
