Some users at DPReview are saying D300 images are soft. I was worried about my own camera, but this photo looks sharp to me. This was hand held and shot under fluorescent lights.
(shot in raw (.nef), fine, full-size; reduced to 640 x 425 .jpg; sharpened).
Click to see an unsharpened crop (original .nef file saved as full-sized .tif, which was in turn cropped and saved as .jpg for uploading to DPC). Check it out, it's really disgusting. The pores in my nose look like craters.
Oops, apparently the sample above was further resized by DPC! Should have realized there's an 800x800 max.
Subject is me. This isn't really a self-portrait because someone else was holding the camera. I have yet to be able to produce such a sharp photo myself, but I know that is due to the photographer, not the camera. Back to Photography 101: How to Hold the Camera!
EXIF:
Camera: D300
Lens: Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D
ISO: 400
Program: Normal
Auto Exposure (-1.33 compensation) and Auto White Balance
Metering: Center Weighted Avg
Speed: 1/60 sec.
Aperture: f/3.2

| They said the same thing about the D200 when it came out. I guess you noticed it didn't keep a bunch of people from winning ribbons on DPC. |

I believe the default in-camera sharpening is very light on the D200 compared to other cameras, this tends to make the JPGs look a bit soft. |

Yeah, it was the same with the K10D... only people shooting jpg complain about it though. |

Thanks, Leroy. I hadn't even noticed that. I was thinking "exfoliant." :-p |
