I'm about to step up to a DSLR. I have been using CF cards for years and am befuddled by the nomenclature surrounding the various types of SD memory cards. Of course I want to find a good match for the Pentax DSLR I'm planning on getting (K100D Super), but I know nothing about SD cards.

Any suggestions?

I am also wondering what types of SD cards will be readable by my universal card reader/floppy drive (internal). How can I determine this?

Thanks to any and all who may respond.

if your getting a dslr your gunna want to use CF cards or XD cards(olympus and Fuji cameras only) because they process the files alot faster than a sd card will. i dont think there are many dslrs out there with sd and if it is i recommend not buying it unless it also takes cf because the lack of write speed when using a sd card

Not the case anymore--- alot of DSLRs use a combo of SD and CF, well Canons do-- and some DSLR's use only SD now-- I think the Poster wanted advice on specific SD cards...
There are alot of fast ones out on the market now-- that have the same speed as CF cards..I dont have a brand preference with cards, but Im sure someone will chime in with one.

well in that case, get the sandisk ultra 3 its 20mb/sec almost as fast as the cf cards. im not saying there bad. but SD is made for for the purpose of audio entertainment with mp3 players and not made for high writing speeds for photography.

i've been using sd cards in my D50 for over a year, before i switched to my S3pro, which uses CF cards and i must say, the sd cards in the d50 worked ALOT faster than the CF ones in my s3 (and i have sandisk extremeII both sd and cf). but i think it's more a problem of the slow processor than the actual writing speed of a card...

but to answer your question, i think there are not tto many diffent types od sd cards out there, i only know about sd, sdhc (high capacity) and smart-sd(?).
sd and sdhc should work for your k100 i think.

The original SD spec only went up to 2Gb capacity. The newer SDHC goes much higher, but you must have a camera and card reader that can read them.

The SDHC standard also has classes which represent the write speed. class 2 is 2Mbps. class 4 is 4Mbps, and so on.
