I'm all for equality and political correctness but this he/she/partner talk is all a bit pedantic...

It's just you.

Yup have to agree with Spazmo99 and most of the others, sorry its you buddy...

Just a side thought though, was your knowledge of photography genetically encoded in to your mind? Or did you actually learn how to use your camera from a book or someone else? I'm not trying to be snarky here but we all have to start somewhere...

For me the frustration lies not with beginners (and I include myself in that bracket though unlike my friend I have a basic knowledge of aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc.) but with seeing really fantastic equipment not being used to its full potential. Some people do believe that the most expensive equipment is going to give them the best photos, and they would IMO do better to learn on S3's or G9's or similar...

Btw, the use of the masculine when gender is unknown is still proper grammar...

Oh, absolutely. Mother + partner = in all likelihood husband was my thinking. I got no problem with same-gender marriages; in fact, I am about to feed such a couple some killer chili momentarily...

While Massachusetts might allow "marriages" ... Same-gender partnerships don't enjoy benefit of marriage in all states...cause you know, some states might run out or something...

Hey, the more people buy cameras, the cheaper they get, so I'm all for it. If they can't use them, they are still helping the world of photography, because it makes the gear more affordable for people who can use it well. :) And hey, if you help her out, she might lend you stuff sometime.

I can understand the OP's frustration. Many of us have to scrape and save loose change for every new piece of gear, so seeing someone who went out and bought top-of-the-line equipment and has no idea how to use it would irritate me, too. Perhaps it's silly (snobbish), but I'd grumble and roll my eyes.

Now granted, if they were going to learn photography and work at it, that's one thing. But if she's just a soccer-mom who had to have something "better than" a P&S, then she's a snob too. And I'm a firm believer that people who do not know how[i/] to operate a piece of equipment should not be [i]allowed to use it.

You should marry her, that way you'll have access to the 1D Mark II all the time.

If indeed this was a mandated pre-requisite, I am of the opinion that our roads would be much safer, but alas, such is not the case.

I am somewhat intrigued by your comment. Does this mean that you are fully cognizant of the operations of every single item you use in your daily life.

I have found that during emergency situations, the number of people that can fend for themselves is rather limited and that at the onset of such scenarios they must rely on the intervention of others.

Alas, it is not the case, although I agree with you, the roads would be MUCH safer. (For instance, 4-wheel drive does NOT mean you can do 40 mph through the snow and still be in control...)

I wish I could claim that I was a master of every single item I use, although that would probably be impossible. But I do make a decided effort to, at the very least, understand the theory behind the equipment I use. I know how an internal combustion engine works, I know how most of the systems in my car operate, even if I couldn't necessarily repair them myself. Likewise with aircraft, boats, computers, cameras, microwaves, whatever. But then again, I like knowing how things work.

During emergency situations, most people panic, which is a good first step to dying. Panic never helped anyone, and I believe that if most people were able to stop and think clearly for a moment, they'd be able to do at least some fending for themselves. And if they understood how equipment around them worked, it would doubtlessly be more useful to them.

Lies! Damned lies! 4 wheel drive lets you race through snow at any speed you wish.

The subsequent inability to stop is the only problem.

I highly recommend an old story/novella by Theodore Sturgeon called The (Widget), The (Wadget) and Boff for an alternative perspective on this particular phenomenon.

Who gives a damn about if she is single/married or what ever.

What pisses me off is your attitude toward a friends mother. A kind young kid of "mine" who is knowledgible about photographic stuff, had better help a friend's mom. Or I would ground him and take his camera away until he learns respect. I guess it a generation gap or something. I would spend time helping her, just because its a friend's mom. I do it all the time with my daughter's friends parents who are just getting to digital photography. I remember when I was 12, I taught a friend's mother how to play chess. After three months of lessons, she was able to compete locally in tournaments and win. Next time just be kind and help someone who maybe trying.

lol this thread is still going....

I would have helped her out...lol it would not have bothered me that she had top of the line equipment or that her gear was better than mine and she knew nothing at all about how to use it.

lol... it may have been a gift or she may have been one of those people whom like to buy the best stuff but who knows.... anyway I would have helped her and telling her "hey thats an awesome camera" and the showed her some settings to use or some pointers. Lets all remember their was a time when we did not know our camera.

And also we all help each other out here. So I would have helped her and it would not have bothered me at all

Apparently you both missed the part where he said that "he was happy to help her out" and then his subsequent post where he said that she called him to do some work for her since he had helped her out earlier...

he was pissed at the fact that his friend's mom has the money to go out and buy pro-level stuff without even knowing how to use its potential ... meanwhile he is "making due" with his XTi and consumer-grade lenses as a more advanced photographer.

Still no answer to the hotness factor, and I feel this information weighs heavily both on the question of how much assistance to provide and possibly providing a resolution to your own gear envy...

I think I finally get it, a car dealer type person talked her into buying what she really needed. I can see why he was pissed now, she was taken by a commissioned saleman. I'd be pissed too if that was what was the point. ;)
