Hey guys, here's the scoop: Night football game, fairly well lit (on ESPN 2), shooting from the field, I'm renting a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM to outdo my Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 II/III USM.

Any tips about using the IS. I haven't delt with this feature before. I will be hand holding the camera (fingers crossed for a monopod for Christmas). Turn it on? Leave it off? Panning? I'm looking forward to playing with expensive stuff!

Thanks for all your help!

PS: Tune into ESPN2 Saturday night at 8pm central and cheer the NWMSU Bearcats on in a HUGE National Championship Semi-Final game! I'll be one of the photogs freezing my butt off on the sidelines.

Want to borrow a 120-300 2.8 zoom? BTW I'll check out the game, and honestly you likely wont need the IS, personally I'd turn it off and shoot as if it were a normal lens.

Matt, thanks for the input...I almost sent you a PM about this question, but figured you would see the thread tonight or tomorrow. That 120-300 would be sweet! I am sure I will be missing 200-300 range, since I have shot with my 75-300 all year. It has never been a problem (light-wise) b/c the games have all been at 12 or 1. I've got a 300 2.8 (from Schiller's) lined up for next weekend if we make it to the Championship Game...and am really looking forward to being able to shoot more open on the longer side.

You are going to have to stop offering to let me borrow your stuff...I might make myself do it! I would love to try out that lens, but hate to inconvenience you in any way.

I'm shooting indoor sports, and its sitting here in the case doing nothing. The offer is open if you would like to borrow it. All I ask is that you take good care of it and bring it back in the same condition it left in. Offer is open.

I could always tempt you with a 1DMKIIn that sitting here as well!! That would be overkill to learn in one day though.

Ha Ha! I was just seriously considering the lens...then for some reason I decided to tap F5, saw your edit and almost shot a half eaten pretzel stick out my nose! Your offer is too good! If you are sure there is no way you will need it (spontaneous zoo trip or something) I think I should swing by and pick it up. This could be my brother's last game after all.

Sorry this reply took so long...my aunt interupted with a print order.

I'm shooting basketball all weekend and the weather, well you have seen it. Shoot me a PM I'll give you my home address you can stop and pick it up. Do you have a solid monopod? If not I'll lend you mine. This is definatly a lens you dont want to handhold all game. It weighs 6 pounds, and if there is any thought of weather I'll send its raincoat.
