More Examples Today from My new Tamron 28-75, they're by no means anything spectacular, just tried to get a few shots I thought would be in focus from "everyday use" for example purposes. Here's what I have:

F8.0 1/125......................F5.6 1/160.....................F8.0 1/160
[thumb]620210[/thumb] [thumb]620209[/thumb] [thumb]620206[/thumb]
[thumb]620203[/thumb] [thumb]620204[/thumb] [thumb]620205[/thumb]
ISO 200 @ 47 mm ......ISO 200 @ 50mm........ISO 200 @ 75mm

Tried to not "re-compose" by selecting focus point. Hand-Held (held real still, again, trying to get "everyday" sort of shots).

My Parameters are:
Tone Curve : -
Sharpness level : -
Pattern Sharpness : -
Contrast : 2
Sharpness : 2
Color saturation : 2
Color tone : 1

Shot in Raw and Converted.

What do y'all think? It seems like everything is on the softer side. I'll conduct more rigid ruler-type tripod tests later to get more nitty-gritty.

Thanks again.

Those look about right to me---

100 % crops arent gonna be sharp as a razor unless you invest some serious cash into your lenses..

Notice one thine about your crops, the Lack of CA, perfect examples of how the tamron handles CA.. A lesser lens would have purple fringing all over the place on the chromes...

Honestly they look about like my crops with same camera and lens..

Where was your focus point for the fireplug? Did you check these @100% where you focused?

OOPS. I wasn't very clear. Was the fireplug your focuspoint or center?

Appears to me that the grass is in sharper focus than the hydrant.

I don't see much of a problem here; the following is the 100% crop of the utility vehicle after sharpening in CS3, using "smart sharpen" at the default setting:

If I shoot in Raw and increase sharpness it looks really good. I guess I just wondered if it's normal to be somewhat soft before post processing?

PS This Tamron lens rocks

well, when you're shooting jpeg the camera puts the sharpness filtery thing onto the pics to make them appear sharper (someone else could no doubt explain this better). with raw, there is no tinkering whatsoever so the sharpness you add in raw is the same sharpening as that which could happen in Jpeg, only you can control the amount. Because of this raws can look a little softer, and noisier too since there is no inherent noise reduction going on, but this can be sorted in whatever raw converter you use.

I may be way off the mark here, but those be my thoughts.

RAW files always look soft compared to the jpg out of camera. Tez is correct, they must be sharpened. These days I sharpen a bit in RAW and then sharpen again as my last step, depending on output.

Well, I think the mystery is solved because it's been only recently that I have been shooting a LOT more in RAW. It makes a whole lot more sense now, thanks everyone for your patience and help.
