Thanks in advance for your help here.

Will the ST-E2 fire my 430ex flash?
What range does the ST-E2 get indoors/outdoors?
Any known drawbacks with using an ST-E2?
Is there another way to do this?

It will fire the 430ex

I've used mine up to 30-40 feet on a fresh battery

Uses infrared, line of sight. It will work through glass but not walls.

There are radio triggers out there, but they are more expensive. I wouldn't be without my ST-E2

I'm looking at a basic light setup for now.

Have the 430ex and want to use it off camera so I thought I'd go the ST-E2. Will then get a light stand, adapter thing that holds both the flash and an umbrella, and some reflectors to bounce the light back.

Thought this would work for a bit and then I can slowly increase.

Thoughts?

That would work very well indeed. You can get a stand, umbrella holder (which holds the flash on the stand too) and umbrella for under $50.

I'm in Australia. Don't think I'll get it all for $50 here sadly. Where would you recommend in America - could always have it mailed if it works out a lot cheaper.

I'm thinking his basic setup would prove quite portable for outdoor work also. Will look at getting a 580ex down the track (with another light stand, umbrella, etc).

I do believe that Midwest Photo Exchange ships internationally. Not sure how much it would cost but I am pretty sur ethey do. Their strobist kits are a great deal.

OK, will keep working my questions on this thread.

Has anyone got the cheap radio transmitter ones (like the Pocket Wizards but not nearly as expensive).

Have you found them successful?

I know I loose ettl when I go this way so I would need to learn more about light (sooooo much to learn about everything with photography but I'm sooo loving it all - just get confused with the choices)

Those that have the ST-e2, have you found times it doesn't work - have heard outside with bright days doesn't work that well. Have also heard that a 580ex as the master has a better range so think that might be a better way to go. Then if I get these cheap radio transmitters I could have both flashes off the camera and work that way or maybe go for a ST-E2 at that time.

Is there a site that shows all the tricks for bouncing your onboard camera flash? Always happy to learn more.

I use the cheapo "Gadget Infinity" flash triggers. I don't use them with Canon flashes, so not sure how compatible they are, but I have missed a beat with them using Sunpak 383 Auto flashes.

I have to say they are definitely worth what I paid for them.
