so I was looking for a reverse ring and read somewhere that they dont work on the D40 because it has a different lens set up? Does anyone know if this is true information?

| A regular reversing ring should work fine. The D40 has the same lens mount as the D200 minus the built-in focus motor (which is irrelevant when reversing a lens). |

Are you planning to reverse-mount your 18-55 zoom? Should work since it's a 52mm filter thread, but hmmm, I've never thought about reversing a zoom. |

nah, I am buying a 50mm 1.8 lens. |
