I LOVE to see this one as a challenge suggestion for a challenge in the near future.
It comes from a fellow DPC member ErikV re this quote from him...... Now that we found drewmedia, the topic for next week's challenge can be "Where in the world is boysetsfire?" Except for this one the goal will be to closely emulate his style.
See this link for further information to why it would be a good challenge idea..... Where is boysetsfire

Ummm...no disrespect to this particular member that left, but a challenge? Why?! People leave all the time. You could pick numerous departed DPC members to emulate, many that have left silently in the night without anyone's knowledge of departure.

OK, Point taken, and naybe you are right....
I just felt his style was so unique, and worth responding to, re some of the suggestion in the other thread about him.

I see no problem with this challenge. Along the same lines why not have similar challenges from time to time and call them : Think like (member).
I could clearly see challenges based around a number of members, think how much fun a Think like Art challenge could be.

yeah, it's his distinctive style that makes the challenge worthwhile.

Barry, I think Nick really reached many people here with his unique style of photography - possibly more than he knows.
He was so consistant and to some of us DELICIOUS - he had a 'cult' following here and many of us are so VERY sorry to see him go.
There are a group of photographers who frequent this site that 'feed' the creative spirits of some of us - they are unique, bold, left of centre and never change their styles even though they are quite certain never to 'ribbon' (which to many is seen as the 'goal')
Nick leaving has 'surprised' many of us and saddened me particularly because I truly liked what he did and loved trying to 'pick the Nick' in any challenge.
He will be missed by more than a few people.
I will say though - I can't image that any image I take could emulate Nick - but it would be great to give it a go!
Barry - Hope this helps you understand the 'why' of this suggestion - SMILE! |

I SECOND this and thank you so much for your honest opinion Lisa, as I really do believe there are many that think the same way you do.....

I'd rather have him back than a challenge, though. I third Lisa's comments. Just not the same to stick in a shot that you think he might like and not get a comment from him. :( And definitely not the same when you want to wander through his portfolio to be both awed and inspired.
It is a good suggestion, Shez. |

It's odd or perhaps not odd that such a departure from his style won him a ribbon. Bright, doutone-ish, selective saturation...not the usual. A testimony in itself.
I'm glad that he didn't serve up this type of image for the sake of a ribbon and appeared to go more with his heart. I wish more people would do that.
People do come and go....good bad and indifferent. I think it's a nice idea but would probably be better as a side Challenge where people could go deeper and explore the style and the light in greater depth. The side Challenges are an extraordinary way to really learn...better than the one shot deals IMO.
Cheers.
