Well i know how us dpc'ers love to have a good little discussion every once in a while.
Here is a link to an article about a class that im taking right now. (The quote by Dan Gruskin)

So what do you guys think?
Is a class like this bad for school or should more school have courses that prepare students for the life after high school?

Seems to me one of the biggest advantages is the openness of the dialogue. Students (like Dan) are not stupid: Even if they don't talk about these issues, they can see them. It appears this class gives students the opportunity to talk about these issues without fear and maybe it will open their own minds and empower them to challenge stereotypes. |

I can't see how it can be bad. The issues exist and won't change by ignoring them. |

some people think that it is just making us more aware of racist/sexist/classist topics and thus making us support them, other people think that school should be a place to learn academic subjects and nothing else. Personally this class is the best class i have ever taken and ive learned more in it than i have throughout most of highschool. |

If the only result of the course was to demonstrate "the implicit assumptions made in advertisements" and expose them to critical analysis by teenagers, it would in my opinion be a resounding success. |
