I have recently installed a wi-fi router so my kid can play his XBox online. My question is this. Since the router is always on and the internet connection is always on, am I at risk when I turn the computer on and the firewall hasn't started yet?

you need to encrypt it. Do you know how?

I had to enter a really long code into the kids XBox when I set everything up, is that what you mean?

Yes, it sounds like you've encrypted it. If you browse the available wireless networks from a computer, you should be able to see it with an indication that it is locked. If you don't do that than anyone within range can get into your network and use you connection as well.

Make sure to use WPA encryption. The older WEP was broken a long time ago and will only deter casual access.

There should be a firewall on the router. Make sure it's setup and letting nothing in (except the few ports you need for the X-Box).

I dont know if THIS actually works as I dont know enough about networking but would be funny as all heck if it did :P

and as they said use WPA and if you search for available networks yours should show up with a little key or lock beside it to show its secured. I moved my WAP over to my parents so I can use my laptop over there and just jump on to my neighbors connection if Im feeling to lazy to find a cat6 cable to plug in to at home LOL
