I developed two entries for that challenge...one literal, and one more figurative (which was my entry.) Here's the literal one that I decided against. There was one similar shot in the challenge, so I'm glad I went with the other, even though it's scoring low. I might have entered this one if the balloons had been just a little more released from her hand. Blustery day made getting the timing right very difficult.

Hi Judy,
I saw the similar shot you spoke of and commented accordingly, this would have got a reasonable score from me as it fits the challenge pretty well and as you say could have been better if the release was a little more in progress.Nevertheless a nice pic.
I am not in a position to be technically critical and leave it to the experts.
Paul.

lol I think your's was probably much better than mine. I really like my other shot better, but it's not scoring well. I enjoyed taking both shots, though. This one was COLD! She had a fishing line attached to the bottom of the balloons so that we could reclaim the balloons after each "release" (had her foot on the fishing line.) Still, I never quite got the shot I was after. :(

I like this, but agree it would have been better further into the release. Indeed my first impression was that the balloons well composed by themselves against a nice sky might have been enough. I think the "letting go" release itself isn't critical, and I like the concept of letting the viewer make those connections themselves (thinking).

here's my best attempt at some constructive criticism.

very nice idea - balloons are a lovely subject with their colors and arrangements and the nastalgia effect they have on viewers. and great for this challenge as well. how many other subjects will float up and away when you let them go? with balloons you get an immdediate sense of action.

what would i do to improve this image?

well, when i first viewed it i had a strange reaction to it. something was putting me off. eventually i realized that it looked somewhat odd to see balloons being released by someone wearing a winter coat. balloons give me a sense of warm days, sunshine, walking through the amusement park, etc. somehow, a cold day just doesn't jive right with balloons for me. so to fix this, i would ditch the jacket and also find a background that didn't reveal trees in their winter state of leaflessness. also, a sky that contained more blue would probably help this, along with giving a more vibrant backdrop to the balloons.

i'd watch the crop - this one seems a little tight. i'd like to see a little space above the balloons to give me a sense that they have somewhere to go.

the balloons themselves seem a little small. they are obviously meant to be the main focus. i'd like to see some bigger, plumper balloons, or maybe just more of them. also, they seem a little washed out. perhaps a little color, levels, curves, etc, tweaking in photoshop could help this a little.

right now, i can see the intention of the photo, but the result still looks a little more on the snapshot side. i think a few simple changes could turn this already great idea into a great photograph as well.

i'm still relatively new to photography so i can't guarantee that any of this is actually true or good advise, but i hope it helps just the same.

good luck!

darcy,

Thanks for the thoughtful critique! :) Many of the things you mention are why this one wasn't entered.

I was disappointed when I blew up these balloons...I, too, wanted some larger rounder ones. :( I asked my daughter about ditching the coat, but really it was too cold so we just decided to go as it was.

I waited and watched the weather report for that "blue sky" opportunity, which unfortunately never came - this was as close as it got. ~sigh~

I even contemplated marking the balloons with "things" we let go of...like anger, pain, regret, dreams....then thought against it.

Thanks so much again for your comments. Very helpful!

Judy
