I'm new to the site and thought i'd post a couple of pictures to see what people think of them, these two are a couple of my favorites and they may not be up to the standard of most of you here, but i like them.

Hi Jason,
First of all, I`m no expert (still looking for tips myself).
So I can only tell you the differences I would have made in taking your pics but that`s not to say they would be improvements. :-)

In the first picture I would have filled more of the frame with the subject...if this wasn`t possible then I would go for as shallow a depth of field as I could to make the subject stand out and reduce detail in the foreground and background.

The second picture (very impressive)..I would probably have composed it by dropping the horizon slighly thereby reducing the featureless foreground and including more of the interesting sky.Might also be more dramatic in B/W.

Hope this helps...btw, I see you are from NZ..when I looked at your mountain pic I could have sworn it was Scotland, a very similar landscape. Look forward to seeing more of these shots from you in the future.

regards,
Gordon

I agree with Gordon on both photos for the most part, but think I prefer the mountain photo in color, maybe adjust levels a little, and maybe brightness/contrast to give the sky a little more drama.

Read Setz's tutorial on The Rule of Thirds. That is pretty much what Gordon was referring to, when suggested adjusting your horizon.

Welcome and good luck here.

Nice shots for a start. I'm pretty much a beginner myself, but here's what I would do.
On the dog, he's cute but the best part of the photo is his face with that tongue. Zoom in or crop to fill the frame with his head and you'd have a really neat portrait of your pet.

On the landscape, I think decrease the amount of foreground. The horizon is pretty striking. Checking the tutorial on the rule of thirds is a good idea anytime. Alternatively, you might place something in the foreground to make it more interesting. Is there an old car, house ruins or anything. If you're skilled enough, try inserting something to give the foreground more interest.

Keep on trying.

Thanks for your comments, thoughts and the link to the rule of thirds I will be looking over this and seeing what I can do to maybe change the pictures slightly. Thanks again for the warm welcome.

Lovely shot Jason, I don't know about the technical side but it looks good to me.

I really like the last shot of your puppy. Here's just a quickie example of some of the ways I would edit your pics. That sky one is a very lovely area and a nice shot.
