I was pretty dead set on getting the 28-75 f2.8 which I have read rave reviews on, and then I stumbled upon the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 which also has just as good of reviews. I currently have the Canon 50 f1.8II and the (yippee) kit lens.

I have recently gotten into portraiture and loving it and am building up a good portfolio (I intend to post some examples soon). The nifty 50 has been my "ol' blue."

Convince me on which one I should get (I'm doing primarily senior portraits and family portraits (outdoor mostly)).

Don't try to convince me on primes (canon 85 f1.8 etc) because I need the versatility otherwise.

Thanks!

If you like doing portraits I don't see much attraction to the wide angle zoom really.

I agree with the above. I bough the Tamron 17-50 as a walk-around lens.

The 28-75 is more appealing to me because of the extra focal length. I guess I was wondering if there was any real advantage to the 17-50 portrait-wise?

Well, the 17-50 on your XT is roughly the same range as the 28-75 on a full-frame camera, and also the same range as your 18-55. It is one of the most popular zoom ranges out there.

I went from my 18-55 to the 24-105, and I do miss the wide end for landscapes/creative angles.

If everything else was the same, for that zoom range, I'd get the one with the wider end, because the 55-75 difference isn't that important. It's not really long enough to be your long lens. You'll probably get a 70-200 or 70-300, or 100-400 for the long end.

So combine your wide with your mid-range, and get a different lens to cover long. Just my 2 cents. =)
