I have a chance to sell my D40 basically for the price I had first bought it.
So, Im thinking of an upgrade I have 2 non autofocus lenses and I know that people say that manual focus is the real deal etc, but I havent been able to get good results so far. Mainly because tryng to zoom in on something far away that is moving and im shaking makes it impossible for to focus in time.

Anyway, it seems like the D80 is a logical next step, but i have some reservations about it. Some reviews for the d40 claim its better than the d80 (except for the autofocus).

So is the only next step 'up' a D300? thats a big jump in my pocket.

Any suggestions anyone feels like giving me?

If you can afford a D300 grab it, it is the latest Nikon has to offer and is rather nice. If the budget does not allow a D300 then grab a used D200 or even a Fuji S5 pro or the S3 pro. All are way better than the D40 IMHO

Not that I'm a Nikon man but from what I've read - the D80 is by far a better camers then the D40. I must admit the D300 sounds nice but costs a lot more. As Mak suggested - maybe a used D200 but I still think the price will be greater than the D80.
Seeing you haven't got autofocus lenses I'd be inclinded to get the D80 and a couple of nice lenses.

If budget is an issue, I'd be inclined to go for the D80, it's a nice camera and streets ahead of the D40 in features. If you have the cash a D2/300 would of course be nice, but the D80 is an amazing piece of equipment.

I will probably get a D80 soon too and I use a d40 now. I cant afford the 300 yet, but the 80 is a nice upgrade!

Thanks for the replies. (and Doomo Arigatoo Gozaimashita to MAK)

One thing I was thinking of about the D80 is that is there any word of a new one comming out soon?

The D200 just became the D300
the D40 the D40x

is it time for the d80 to get a facelift? it was made in 2006 (and that seems like a long time the way things are now)

My guess would be that the D80 will be upgraded sometime in the next year. Nikon seems to be on a 18-24 month upgrade schedule based on their past actions.

I'm with those who say spend your money on the best glass you can buy. Lenses last forever, bodies come and go and you can always upgrade again later. A D80 or a used D200 will serve you for quite some time and by then they will be up to the D400 or 500. One thing to think about is that the D200 is quite a bit larger and heavier than the D40 and the D80 so if you don't like to carry the weight it can be an issue.

Good luck.

I'd most likely sell the D40, then wait a little bit and try to go straight for a D200.

Check eBay, Craigslist etc..

As time passes, prices drop. I'm not saying that you should wait months, but From d40 to d80; I'd just save up a little more or spend a little more and get something that won't be completely obsolete in the next few years.

And I'm not saying that the D80 will become obsolete, I'm just saying that why not go the extra mile and get a overall "better" camera.

But good luck on your decision.

It'd be worth your while to go browse around some buy/sell forums for cameras (Nikonians dot org). Since the D300 came out the D200 is a lot cheaper new, and so the used price had to follow, I've got one with a low shutter count, just had regular cleaning/maint done , being shipped out this week that I'm picking up for just under $900 canadian.

With the resale of your D40 this should be a pretty nice upgrade that won't hit your wallet TOO hard. I'd love a D300 but for less than half the price I'm going this route for the time being.

I think I'd go with a used D200. I have seen them on Fredmiranda going for less then $1000 lately. Seems people are dropping them fast now before the value drops alot more since the D300 has hit the street.
