I need a good flash for my 717 shoe... I'm willing to spend some money and I need something that has a decent recycle time. Please suggest. I'm in dark terrirory when it comes to what flashes I can use for my camera...

I was looking at:

from Sony, but I read that it has an 8 second recycle time... Thats scary to me!

I got the promaster flash 5750 and the Sony Module

Then when I got my D60, I bought the Canon Module and I can use the same flash on both cameras.

However I think the recycle time may be slower than you want, I beleive its at about 5 to 6 seconds.

Russell,

I also use a promaster for my film body. A flash that uses AA batteries is considered advantageous, as the worldwide availablity is an issue for those who travel. The cycle times quoted above seem excessive to me. With fresh batteries, capabilities should be nearly immediate. Wedding photographers, typically have requirements for flash photos, and I'm certain that they cannot afford 8 second recharge times. You may check with some local fotog's to see what battery packs they use.

I don't recall ever waiting more that a second for the flash to ready itself for the next picture. The sony model displayed in your post looks sound and appropriate. If it takes AA's, go for it.

The recycle time is probably quoted for a 100% flash discharge. It is rare that you need to discharge the flash at full power (at least in my experience with the 10D and 550EX flash). Most of the time the flash discharges at a much lower power, which means it recycles much faster.

In addition, using some good, high-quality NiMH AA's will significantly reduce your recycle times. You can pull more current through a NiMH battery than a typical alkaline cell. I'd recommend some PowerEx 2200mAH batteries and a MH-C401FS cool charger "combo kit" from Thomas Distributing (about $48.97 for the complete kit, $13 more gets you 8 batteries instead of 4). Works great with my 550EX. No affiliation, just a satisfied customer.

I got the hvl f1000. it connects thru the acc terminal on the f717, but mounts to the hot shoe. Im not sure of the exact recharge time, but I have a MS Pro, and even in the fastest of shooting modes, the flash is always ready, I would highly reccommend it.
