Yippee, collecting my new D300 and 70-200 lens today.

According to their warehouse they only had 7 left (this was yesterday). should be with me on Thursday. Very excited as I hadn't anticipated being able to get one until next year. As I hadn't pre-ordered, I am quite excited about this..

Got mine Wednesday night. The battery cap and the charger for the en-el4a bettery are back ordered.
I am planing on going shooting today to take this baby for a ride.

Since I missed the first round at B&H, I've been taking a little more time -- considering lenses and accessories, etc. I could mail order a D300 from a big chain store, but for some reason I'm reluctant.

Yeesh. I'm feeling really happy that I pre-ordered one through Ritz, while watching everyone else on the planet get one as I'm sitting here tapping a hole into my table with my fingers. Bah.

Aren't Ritz and Wolf Camera the same? I hope you get yours soon, I walked in off the street and got one from Wolf, so surely it should be on it's way........ I suppose it depends when you ordered it. The sales lady at Wolf told me if I hadn't got one of the last ones in the warehouse (I bought it on Sunday 25th), it would have been February before the next batch arrived.

I think the guy who does the "live chat" thing on the Ritz site probably had to take his smoke break after I got done with him a few minutes ago. Then again, I think he just got done blowing smoke up my butt.

So I got a note on Monday (pasted above) saying that the camera is on its way to the Ritz warehouse, and naturally I haven't heard anything since then. I get this mental picture of some poor Nikon employee, hopping on a rowboat to head across the ocean to drop off my camera at the warehouse.

Actually, after my conversation with the Ritz guy, I get a more clear picture of them basically fabricating the story of the camera being on its way just to dangle some bait in front of me to keep me from walking down the street to see if I can find one on a shelf somewhere.

The Ritz guy was super indecisive, saying that the camera *should* be on its way by the second week of December. I asked him about the note I got and his response was that, as an online retailer, they're dependent upon manufacturers to send the products to them. No kidding! I would kinda think that would be the case with any retailer. But the note said it's on its way, and he's telling me that's "not confirmed."

So I think the Ritz folks have been practicing their smoke-blowing techniques, and it's getting pretty foggy here.

I just reserved one at Vistek in Mississauga and I'm just about to go pick it up. :P Sorry Alan. I wonder about the grip... I stopped using the grip for the D200 because it simply made the whole thing heavy, and pulled away from the body on vertical shots using the tripod. Wonder if I should even bother. The guy was giving me the hard sell on the phone, saying he's only got two and there's no way I'll get one before a few months after that, but meh.

Louis;
The grip on the 300 is made of magnesium like the main body. It costs quite a bit more too. I would suspect it to be a bit better quality than the D200 grip. Just my suspicions as I won't be getting a D300. I'm saving my pennies for the D3 or maybe the later D3X or whatever, unless it becomes a 9,000 dollar camera. I doubt I'll get the D3 before it's a couple of years old as the camera equip. budget is pretty much tapped out. ;)

The charge doesn't come with the camera?

Thanks for the info. I was also contemplating getting the D3. But I'd want to replace my DX lenses in that case, and it would wind up costing a bit more.

Got the grip...Yes it is heavier and more substantial to hold. I like to be able to run two batteries. I also bought the en-el4a battery so I can get the 8fps, but the bl-3 battery cover you need is BACKORDERED so it really is not benefitting me right yet.
Edit to add...I also always used the grip on my D200. It never came off my camera.

Just got back from collecting mine and it is charging right now. I'm getting impatient. I want to play... :)

Well, I got mine. I was just browsing Vistek's website and saw that they had them in stock, so I called a couple of locations and found one in stock closeby. I put a down payment on credit card, and picked it up tonight. I wasn't really planning on it, but it just sort of worked out.

After my hissy fit with Ritz, and a lucky posting by another DPC'er, I now have an actual UPS tracking code! Tuesday is the big day. I'll be standing at the door with my nose pressed up against the glass waiting for the brown truck at noon that day, if anyone needs me.

Alan,

You will love the camera. I strongly recommend the grip for balance and extra battery power. I bought the spare battery and as was already indicated, they recharge in 1.5 hours. YIPEE! Compared to the D2x, this is a godsend and a highly welcome change.

The Live View is assume. I continue to be impressed with the image quality, especially when you consider it is a CMOS chip which is notorious for higher noise thresholds.

That's a good review... particularly coming from someone who has "all the toys!" :)

I've thought about the grip... I may want to add that down the road at some point. The 8 fps is a very exciting feature, although 6 fps is quite a step up from what the D70s offers. If for no other reason, the grip makes the camera look bigger and more menacing!

Naturally, I just realized a couple minutes ago that my dentist appointment is on Tuesday at the same time as the UPS truck rolls around. So I'll have to find a neighbor to sign for it, and I'll be squirming even more than usual in the dental chair.

I added the D300 to my profile two days ago when I ordered it, and today the camera arrived at my office. I'll make it my primary camera -- as soon as I begin to use it! I admit I've got noobie nerves. I want to read the manual first. :-)

PS: I forgot to mention I'm freeeeekin' excited! :-D

Ha! Well, at least I'll read the first sections, the stuff about turning it on without breaking it. Thanks for the congrats!

I was so excited to get mine the day it came out and I love it. I just had to enter a challenge to get one of my pictures on the page where you can view the camera on here. I was so excited to see my complementary colors first up there when I went and viewed the camera the other day. It will be short lived I know!!! Maybe I should print the page and frame it! :)

Can you post a shot how 10.5 looks like on D3?

Yes, OK, you caught me. Good one!

You see, I swore that I would never buy a digital lens and committed to buy only lenses that would work with both digital and film. But, I wanted to play with the 10.5mm, so I bought one this past summer. If is my only DX lens.

As I suspect you already know by your clever question, it will not work full-frame on the D3. However, the D3 will automatically detect the DX smaller flat exit pupil of the lens and drop the image scan downward to a DX frame format from the normal full-frame FX format. Sadly, the file size drops down to about 5-6 megapixels from just over 12 megapixels delivered in the FX mode. So, it is a definite step backwards.

Now, this is where the D300 will come into play. Can you see my genius are work here? lol It works with the DX lens at about 12 megapixels, so it is a suitable compromise.

I depart early tomorrow on a business trip, so when I get back I will give this D3/10.5mm combination a try and see how it works out? I will post an example next week when I return home to Canada. I only travel with the Nikon S7 as I hate dragging the DSLR back and forth through USA customs.

As promised, here are some examples of the Nikon D3 with the Nikkor 10.5mm wide angle lens versus the Nikon D300 with the same 10.5mm lens.

Wait.... the images look like identical setups with just a difference in processing. So I checked your EXIF data, and both images have D300 embeded within them. Did you link the wrong images?

OK, I fixed it. The D3 image is now from the D3 and no longer from the D300. Thanks for pointing out my error.
