That's pretty astonishing. Distortions and vignetting are pretty bad though easily remedied in PS - only the CA's would concern me. |

Also, according to slrgear.com it's a major improvement over the old 18-55 non-IS kit lens... The improved sharpness sounds almost too good to be true for this price point. Even more so since I think Canon said they only added IS and a non-spherical element to correct chromatic aberration. |

It is really exceptional performance for a kit lens. And yes, I think it's partly recognition from Canon that Nikon's kit lens was significantly better, but also that the newer DSLR bodies demand more from a lens, and therefore would make the older version look even worse. |
